Ok, call me stupid, but I've been posting pictures on this site for a couple months and I still haven't figured out to use the gallery tags. (Those make it so that you see the thumbnail, then when you move your mouse over it, it shows the full image, right?) Can someone explain this more thoroughly than the "quick tip" at the bottom? kthxbye.

Actually, please don't call me stupid, it really hurts my feelings...

I may be wrong, but I think it only works when you use the "Attach an Image" button as opposed to linking to photos offsite. If that's the case, they should mention it in the "hint" If that's NOT the case, I'm stumped... seems straightforward enough in the "hint".

If you do it the way I'm suggesting you need to do it and "attach" them, you get the thumbnail deal even WITHOUT the "gallery" tag. The gallery tag just makes it so the thumbnails form a grid instead of taking up lots of vertical space, one thumbnail per line...

The main drawback is you have to shrink your photos down to < 100k before you can "attach" them.

EDIT - fixed a typo, added a thought

Ok, once you upload an image to UER,

it should look something like this in the preview of your post:

pic=48376 but there will be [ ] surrounding it. That will make the image pop up once you drag your cursor over it.

if you make it like this: inp=48376 (again, put brackets around it) it will be a full size image, no pop-up.

Note, if you have uploaded several images you can make a gallery, that will have several of the thumbnails by using the gallery tag. [ gallery] then all of the pic=whatever here then close it with [/gallery ]

If you have an image saved on another site such as flickr, photobucket, or your own site, put (img)whatevertheimages.jpg.comorwhateverthefuckitis(/img) but put [ ] where the ( ) are.

Does any of that make sense?

Am I right then that you can use the "gallery" tag ONLY if you upload your messages to UER, and not if you are just linking to flickr or whatever? I try to do it below, in preview it comes out blank, but maybe it will come through when I actually post it?

EDIT - Right, either I'm an idiot, or, like I said, it just doens't work if you don't upload the photos directly to the forum.

The Gallery Feature ONLY works when you upload to UER.

Here's a more concise explanation.

1. Use the "Attach an Image" button to upload a picture. You'll need to make sure it's less than 100k.

The following code will appear:

[pic=XXXXX]

(where XXXXX is a number the site will create).

2. Repeat step 1 for each picture you have.

3. When you are done, you should have something that looks like this:

[pic=XXXXX]
[pic=XXXXX]
[pic=XXXXX]

4. Now, simply insert the following above the group:

[gallery]

And this below:

[/gallery]

5. Your final code should look like this:

[gallery]
[pic=XXXXX]
[pic=XXXXX]
[pic=XXXXX]
[/gallery]

Thanks, guys, helpful stuff. The continuation of my question is this: Can one use the gallery tags for images that are linked to, rather than uploaded? (expecting "no")

How do you make it less than 100k? When I tried to upload photos that I have stored they are too large, can I make them smaller? N.

I guess the question is how to shrink them. Maybe I'm missing something here. N.

http://www.irfanview.com seems to be the general consensus if you don't have something like Photoshop or PaintShopPro or whatever.

not to pile insult on injury but the head honcho of this website just answered that question for you in the very first sentence of his post

now heres some basics

file size = how many bytes the image file is (100k is all you can upload)

image size = how many pixels wide by how many high (eg 640 x 480 or 800 x 600)

shrinking? if you mean resizing does not guarantee the file size will be under 100k theres a way to save a .jpg with more compression/less info

download and learn irfanview its free and user friendly Ive also used/like thumbs+plus
