| | | Having done a search I don't see a forum on this topic. What are the requirements for running the chat room, software wise? I have Win 98, IE6, Shockwave, the latest version of Flash from Macromedia and Direct-X 9. I recall Flash was essential, but I still get the missing picture icon.

I completely disagree. :s ME was the worst OS ever made, and Win98 SE is far superior... ME didn't even let you get into DOS to fix it when it crashed every 30 minutes...

Oh yeah, I hated the DOS block. I think it was a poor attempt to make 98 seem like 2000 in look. I don't know why they even made it. There is a patch out there that allows you to boot in DOS, but really I don't see why they didn't put it there in the first place. In OS-only terms, 98 SE is probably better, but a typical machine with Windows 98 on it might be worse than a Windows ME box, just because they were made at different times. In general though, Windows isn't too good. I actually do like what I've seen of Windows XP, but I don't own one so I don't know how good it is in actuality.

Having used that piece of shit, bastard of an os, I can tell you that Beryl is not exaggerating. Except that you'd be lucky to get 30 minutes out of it.

Wasn't ME going to be what basically Windows Longhorn was suposed to turn out to be in development?

ME had nothing to do with any of that, it was the last OS to use the 9x kernel, whereas 2000/XP/2003/Vista(Longhorn) use the NT kernel... Unless you meant user-wise and not technology-wise, then yes. A dumb drm-full "cute looking" os that does nothing, and even does that badly, and gives no real incentive to purchase it.

| | | to add to the complete thread hi-jack... I agree about ME ... don't you just love how it forgets it's working on something and hangs there until you give it the three-finger-solute and kill whatever's hanging [chances are it's windows explorer]... 2000 and XP are my favorite operating systems. My only complaint about XP isn't even that serious - XP pro installs as if it were home - you boot right to an "XP'd" desktop with all of your icons hidden and the supposedly more efficient start menu, not to mention the fast-user-switching page with user icons . This can be remedied quickly but it's still a required step if you want a serious looking operating system. I have had a box running windows 2000 advanced server that has had incredible uptime. That is one solid operating system, and is probably the most solid "network operating system" I've seen from microsoft. How has everyone's uptime been with server 2003? ~Grit.
