|  | | | A few months ago I took a drive out to the land where I grew up. The house burned down shortly after we moved out more than 20 years ago and I hadn't been back since. The property was hard to find as the remains of the house were over-run by sumac trees and 20 years of growth. To my surprise, the barn was still standing (barely) so I went for a look. There wasn't much to look at in there, but just as I was leaving I came across this:
It took me a moment to remember, but this is a panel off of my old Suzuki dirt bike! I gladly took it home with me as a reminder of my youth.
Anyone else explore an abandoned home where you once lived?

| | | | I explored the remains of the house my mom grew up in with her when I was like 10. The city said they wanted to build a park where it stood so they bough it from my grandparents and made them move (they didn't want to, my Grandpa built the house himself) and then the city burned it down and...35 years later haven't touched. Now it's all overgrown with trees and there's not much more than a foundation left.

| | | | I've visited the remains of my dad's former home with him. He used to go (and still goes every now and then) to collect mushrooms from the forest around his old place, and when I was a kid he took me to see it.
The house itself was burned down, but a large, beautifully deteriorated barn was still standing, with boxes full of things my dad's family left behind inside. I never managed to explore the building thoroughly back then.
Last year I remembered the place and decided to explore and photograph it and add the pics to my website. Someone had burned the whole building to the ground

I hope you know you can sell the wood from that cabin for a small fortune, seriously.

| | | | A few weeks ago my friend brought up that the house she lived in for a few weeks was left abandoned after they left, so we decided to check it out. The entire building was still intact, and the attic/upstairs room was filled with cards, like christmas/birthday/fathers day/mothers day/easter, everything. And by filled, I mean several hundred to a thousand cards up there. Half the street was actually abandoned there, so we continued to check out the other houses, and a few doors down found the old school bus filled with junk that used to be placed in her backyard. How it moved, we don't know. It's interesting checking out places that someone, or yourself once lived, but we didn't find anything of hers. Oh well.

| | | | My two previous homes are both still standing and occupied. The first was a trailer, which just so happens to be about a minute up the road from one of my favorite abandonments. I have such fond memories of the place. Now it looks like such a hole. It's quite odd when you remember something being so big when you were five years old, then when you return when you're twenty and everything's a lot smaller.
I actually used to have a recurring dream about following the train tracks trying to get back to that house (even though the tracks didn't even go all the way there). I had it for years. Then one night when I was fifteen, I dreamt that I reached the house and found a few of my things and I took them home. Never had the dream again.
The second house is in much better condition. I walked through it one last time after we moved out and before the new people moved in. That was kind of strange. I love that house, although I'm quite disappointed with what its current residents have done with it. It used to be bright yellow, and now it's white, and they replaced the cool old door on the front with a boring one. They don't decorate much, either. We used to cover the house and the yard with most excellent Christmas decorations. Sigh. How I loved the cathedral ceiling and the 12 foot Christmas trees.
I haven't lost my mind. It's backed up on disk somewhere. |
