| | | 640 by 480? That isn't even enough to be able to tell anything. I vote for at least 1024x768! And had you guys asked me about this, I could have whipped up a webpage allowing automated submission and voting... -av

There was quite an extensive thread about it... where were you? Anyways, the voting system hasn't been done yet, so you can always pitch in there and help out. TMC.

| | | Don't listen to Av, he's just trying to monopolize the presence of UE online. You should stick with 640x480 for at least this "round". If enough people want a different resolution, I'm sure you'll hear about it.

| | | I think I suggested something about 1024x768 in the original thread, but I guess if I'm one of the few photographers with strong feelings about resolution, we'll just go with 640x480. But realize that even a 4x6 photograph has more detail in it than that.. 640x480 is more or less the equivilent of a wallet sized shot. Even 1MP digicams can do 1024x764. Caput_58

| | | Hm, I think making the res slightly higher might be a good idea too. Keep in mind though that some people have low-res cameras, but are still excellent photographers in terms of composition and originality. In a contest like this, having expensive equipment can tip the scales in your favour, so maybe an upper limit on res is a good idea. 640x480 doesn't sound unreasonable to me. | | | As Caput notes, even 1 megapixel cams can shoot at 1024x764. But to assuage the low-end user and keep the bandwidth draw down, we could always take a middle ground of 800x600. I think that size would still be acceptable to most of us. 640x480 just washes so much of the detail out of the picture.

| | | I have taken most of my pictures with 640x480, because I only had a memory stick, that had 16MB. You can't store too many pictures in that, which are 1024x764. I'm probably not the only one? Now I have memory stick with 256MB, but I haven't photographed with that so much yet, so if we go with higher resolution, my choises are limited. Perhaps including both resolutions as an option to submit photos?

| | | How about you just submit the highest resolution you have. Then, the judges can resize them to 1024 if larger. I hate tiny photos... for example on ninj's site the pictures are like 150x150, they're like thumbnails, you can't make anything out in them. Ninj! Use bigger pics!

I can scan pics for at least 2048 x 1036, that would only overload the contest. A 1024 is just good enough. If your scanner, memory sticks, camera is not good or big enough then too bad.

| | | 640 was intended as sort of a low end cut off. I was hoping most people would submit at higher resolutions, but I didn't want to exclude anyone because their picture was too small. Submit whatever size you can, and I think I'll be resizing them all to 800x600 or 1024x768 for the browsing gallery. The winners will probably be offered in background-like dimensions when the winners are announced. I think I ran this idea past TMC, but the page hasn't been changed yet. Submit what you've got, and I'll work with it from there to make everything pretty.

That would be a pretty shitty way to run a contest. It's not who can make the biggest fucking picture is it ? Some people only have cams that will take 640x480 but they may have totally amazing pictures... of course changing all pics submitted to 1024 will screw the quality of the 640 ones a bit...

| | | I'm gonna avoid my usual snobby elitist tendencies for a moment and make an argument for a MAX picture size. If everyone who could decided to submit 2048x1036 .jpg's (.tif's anyone?), it would put a major load on those viewer's using modems. Assume 30 contestants x 3 submissions x avg file size, and realize that if you expect the judges to be fair and view every submission before judging, you have to put an upper limit on filesize. To resume my snobby elitist ways, with regards to those shooting in 640x400, memory is uber cheap these days, so please stop treating your 1-3MP camera like the VGA camera pen's they sell at walmart. | | | Well, up until not long ago, all we had was a shitty camera that did 640x480 max... so what the hell was I supposed to do ? I didn't have money for a new camera at the time. Other people are in the same boat, but they could still have some great things to photograph and will want to enter in the contest... People have said often it's not the camera but the photographer, well, if that's the case, then even if everyone was at 640x480 that should hold true. A bigger picture does make you a better photographer...
