So what does most everyone do when you run across a homeless person or obvious homeless persons "quarters"?

Most of their spaces are quickly identifiable just by the smell.

I would leave immediately. Imagine someone unknown just entering your home -- wouldn't be too fun.

I tend to leave them alone, I almost stepped on one sleeping once didn't see him untill my foot was coming down. I never bother them.

i usually give them a cigarette and ask them about abandonments.
i recently found a new way in to my personal favorite that way.

I tend to just leave them alone. I don't bother them and they don't bother me.

I did run across a group of about 6 or 7 squatter punks once.. they were kind of pissed until I explained to them what exactly I was doing there. It helped that I was really good friends with someone they all knew, too.

Ive had no problems but then again I look like one of them sometimes when Im out exploring.

Ive had them strike up intelligent conversations or just politely greet me and Ive also had some aggressively approach me and follow me raving and talking about someones trying to get them or wanting to show me something they found or sell me something they stole.

In Dallas especially downtown where there are literally thousands of them you cant be sure what an encounter will bring. Like I said Ive had no problems and most are just sad and harmless souls but many of them suffer from serious mental disorders and they can be real unpredictable or even dangerous so its best to err' on the side of caution.

As for their camps Ive run across many and have even photographed some. But generally I dont hang around long.

I agree, handing out cigarettes if they approach you is an excellent way to show good faith.. If you're not approached however, I would just let them be.

Good idea since cigarettes are getting expensive these days.

I am recognized by allot of this area's homeless. In my long career as a dumpster diver, I've ran into quite a few of them and I'm always friendly.

HA, that was awesome, then you looked at him and you asked me "Dude, what is that" and i replied with "Ahhh, It's someone sleeping".

he was hard to see, he had a dark blanket that blended into the ground, the only reason I could tell it was someone was that the blanket was moving up and down(breathing)

Mostly we just leave them and their stuff alone, one time I did pick up a bums sign and snapped a quick photo, but he was no where to be seen

Now that I have found someone
I'm feeling more alone
Than I ever have before

My friends and I were exploring Bare Cove when we bumped into a couple of homeless guys (before the murders :\). One of my friends was going to walk right into one of the bunkers that they live in when the guy walked out shaking the dirt out of a sweatshirt. We greeted him and then left.

Later on we heard screams and then we ran into a bunch of girls who had been poking around in the bunkers and woke up one of the homeless guys; when we went down the same path we all just ignored the fact that he was sitting up and staring at us.

I had thought of carrying some throw down cash but a pack of cigs is an excellent idea! Would keep me on their good side and maybe even get some more info from them.

treat them like gaurds they are sometimes very loud if you startle them just give them some space and they should leave you alone its not everyday that you see a guy dressed like a ninja run into there home

A good friend is one that bails you out of jail.
But a true friend is the guy sitting next to you in the back of the cop car saying "Man that was awesome!"

Not trying to be hardcore, but they are no more welcome and legal in abandoned spaces than we are. I'm never looking for trouble with them, but I'm here to do my bit and then I'll leave WHEN I"M DONE. Lots of them are so high or drunk I'm not sure if they actually notice me anyway. Regardless, I've never had one give me a hard time, and I've never had to explain myself.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Maybe not, but they are LIVING there while you and I are in Abandoned Building X simply for kicks.

If I'm in a large building (factory, school, etc.) and I come upon a room where someone is "camping", I apologise and go to another part of the building where I will not be bothering anyone. If it's a small building I just apologise and leave. Either way, I am always respectful towards them.

It's more common for me to encounter scrap metal thieves in abandonments, in which case I introduce myself and explain what I'm doing. Luckily I've never encountered anyone hostile--if I did I would leave immediately, but in general I do my thing and let them do theirs. I'm not a big fan of illegal scrappers, so I don't feel guilty about "invading their space".

Um...if you've walked into 'their spaces,' you can pretty much count out referring to them as homeless. After all, you are in their home.

Apologize, explain what you're doing, why you're doing it, and unless they ask you to stay, leave. Don't take pictures, unless you've been granted permission.

And close the door behind you.

I'd have to agree with Jonsered. First of all if there is an identifiable smell it just proves the squatters are befouling the area - which is already over the line for most respectful explorers to do.

I don't agree the area is any more their 'home' just because they live there. All this about showing respect, good faith, etc., are fine and good in theory but chances are these people aren't just housing there with all else being equal. They are likely to have serious mental problems as well. I would consider them dangerous psychotics until proven otherwise. Respect goes both ways.

I can claim 'my space' as much as they do.

The only people UE'ers need to concern themselves is if the REAL owner of the property has a personal issue with you being there. And I don't count nebulous "city property" which after all is my tax money at work.

An owner of a private property may have possible concerns for your safety and fear frivolous lawsuits but apart from that there shouldn't be a problem.

Then there is the final scenario where a property owner wants no one there "just because". Frankly if I were an owner of an abandoned dilapidated building I'd be more upset at people using the area for dumping... as such would increase costs for eventual cleanup. That at least has a logic to objecting to unwanted ne'erdowells. As for a bunch of tripod packing camera-buffs or gamer ninjas who like to play out 3-D labyrinthian environments in reality - again, what's the harm.

I've seen people carrying high-tech camera gear that quite likely exceed the value of the building they are exploring. The building's owners, if there is one, should be thanking urban explorers for increasing property value by proximity. Homeless people or ingress of other rodents should not be part of this equation.
