firstly, i apologize for the late reply

secondly, ZERO -

You really think you'll never be in a situation that can't be handled by the items you mentioned?

EXACTLY. i do honestly think that i will never be in a situation that can't be dealt with by those items. thus far, i've hardly gone anywhere where i felt those things were even worth bringing. if theres a place that i want to check out, but i think that there may be a slight chance that i'll have to kill someone for my own survival, then i'm just not going in. but if i think that i may possibly need to dog-mace some jerk, then i'll probably still go in there. i trust my own judgement, and i'm not going to put somebody's life on the line (mine, my friend's, or a squatter's) for the sake of my pastime.

I carry a knife. I really hope I never have to hurt anyone with it.

How likely is it that squatters actually kill someone?

Wow, thats scary as hell. It makes me think about the fact that 95% of the time I explore alone, but then I dont do some of the type places many people here do such as tunnels and "ghetto" areas as your describing. I drove through an area yesterday like that and saw several buildings that would be cool to check out and was thinking just that, hmmm have to find some help for this are! Glad ya made it out safe!

Me and the people in my group are young teens, so safety is of the utmost importance. If I wanted to sell drugs, or drop a body, it would probably be in an abandoned factory. We obviously can't bring guns and such, but most tools we normally use can be used as clubs in a pinch. A crowbar is perfect for this.
But if I was in a situation where I would need a weapon, running would be my first thought. On the few occasions we've seen signs of people living or being in abandoned places, we leave immediately.

As far as being less in need of a gun in Scotland/UK, British crime has risen even after gun control, and while gun crime itself dropped (although it too has risen recently) overall the level of violent crime has increased. Is that a fair trade-off?

By 'voilent crime' you also include being punched in the face??? How does that compare to having your head blown off by a shotgun exactly?

UHmmm.. You know the UK has ALWAYS had 'gun control', right? It's not legal to operate anything other than a small air pistol / rifle here without a permit (which won't be granted unless you have a firing range, or are a farmer with a legitimate need for a shotgun).

http://www.ukgundealer.com/rules.htm

The worst you will encounter in Scotland is a Ned with a knife. That's fine by me: I hope I never see a Ned with a gun. Idiots running around with machine guns, pistols and rifles here just doesn't happen, thank fuck.

Here's a quick comparison for straight-forward gun related homicides:

(Edit: Stats image fucked)

It appears in Scotland we are statistically more likely to die in a crushing accident with a horse than get shot. I rather like that.

Chris...

PS: Good job your OK DJ... Nice one!

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Wow, that would be rather freaky to experience. Since I live in canada carrying a gun around is not an option (legal option that is). I do still carry a swiss army knife. Not much but it's something.

When it comes to having the protection of weapons I prefer a mag-lite and steel toe boots. Seriously no one questions boots, and it seems everyone on the UE site considers their mag-lite a weapon.

I carry a .45 when I'm exploring by myself, but if I'm with others, I don't so as to keep them out of trouble. I'd rather take that chance.

ROTFL ... being from Canada, the idea of UE'ing with a 1911 or something is so absurd as to be comic (this isn't a diss, abandonedsc -- just that it is SO far outside the envelope for us here).

I don't consider any of my mag-lites to be weapons ... I wouldn't UE w/ a weapon.

I always carry my gun (S&W 44 Magnum Trail Boss) and my knife. I carry this bad boy in the small of my back. Plus I've been trained in Sayoc Kali (Phillipine Knife Fighting), and hand to hand combat. My Dad was a Army MP, so he taught me everything he knows. You have to be one tough SOB to be an Army MP.

DocHolliday - I saw that pick you posted of your gun in the "Other" forum. Doesn't that thing hurt when you fire it? The gun's so tiny, and .44 magnum is a little excessive, especially for self-defense. In many states, anything bigger than a .45 for self-defense is gonna be questioned.

As for myself, I have a Swiss Army knife. I don't expect to be cutting anything other than hard to open film packages. If I ever explore an iffy site, I may invest in something less lethal, like a collapsable baton or mag lite. Whether it's legal for you to carry a deadly weapon or not, cops get iffy if you're trespassing AND armed.

No, the guy in my av isn't actually me.

I actually have the older one of this one, but still the similar.

Just in case I get into a situation where I got to open/get myself somewhere.

The argument usually goes that if the situation is at the point where you have an imminent need to put a hole in something, put the biggest hole in it you can.

There is a reason LEOs themselves are moving AWAY from 9MMP to .40 and .45 again, after many years of just the opposite happening.

Bigger holes are always better.
It's nice to see that we are so well-armed down in here in the Palmetto State...ah, the 2nd Amendment is beautiful thing.
On the other hand, I would think if you were found in violations of state or local laws then most likely your concealed carry permit would be revoked at the very least. Or you get nailed with at least a weapons possession charge if you are carrying unpapered, not good.
I can see the point of people that don't want to carry overt weapons during UE, but I'll admit there are situations (superior numbers of opponents as mentioned previously) that can't be handled with a crowbar, a Mag-lite or a blast of pepper-spray--although if you used them all on him at once he'd probably be reduced to just a crying lumpy puddle at your feet--because by their very natures, the first two are contact weapons, ie you have to be rolling around on the floor with him to use them, putting you within range of his weapons.
A firearm is useful because if Mr. Crackhead Sterno Bum sees someone draw down on him maybe his fried brain cells will fire up and decide that maybe its not a good idea to smash their skull in with a hunk of rebar for their shoes.
No shots need to be fired, it's not that as if drawing a firearm automatically means that it will used. This not to say that the gun should used as a bluff, if you pull it out, you'd better be prepared to fire.
Most of the time, even stupid people realize that they are not bulletproof and no one wants to get shot, no matter how big or small the gun is.

I carry my gerber and my 3" blade.
Stupidly, I too go exploring alone, but most of the squatters here freak out at first but don't get violent. If you explain yourself they're usually okay.

We've met a few that've been a bit strung out and.. well. vicious.

I have difficulty believing that this thread is still alive 1.5 years later!

Regardless, DJ, you made a good call. I often carry a pistol myself, but its always better to walk away (or run) than to hurt somebody or hurt yourself. We're explorers, not assault troops.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.
