Location DB Suggestion

I had a suggestion a while back, but never got commented on in the suggestion thread, so now I'd like to bring it to everyone's attention:

Basically my idea is to split the Ontario UE DB into counties, but not as a seperate level, but just on the surface, so as to make finding locations near you easier(this all about YOU afterall).

The reason this is nessissary is that Ontario is the largest grouping of locations, 541 as of right now, and finding little towns anywhere makes it difficult, you have to pull out a map everytime, having counties would make it possible to know right away what's close by.

How I invision it looking is having a main county heading over the cities(not adding a new level to click down, that could get annoying) so it would look something like this:

COUNTY
town
town
town

COUNTY
town
town
etc.

Ok, that's basically it... this could of course be applied to other locations once they get bigger, however I'm mainly concerned with Ontario as it is the largest grouping... and I'm from Ontario.

To help make it easier to organize these, I would suggest that if this does get implimented, that when you're creating a DB entry, there'd be a field to put in what County it belongs in as well.

i can see where in some places it can be useful, but here in quebec they abolished counties years ago and went with "mrcs" a lot bigger and most people dont even know which MRC they live in

In order for this to work, I'd have to obtain a database of town names and corresponding counties, for all of North America. I don't even know where to get it for Ontario.

However, I am working on a mapping solution, which will show the locations on a map.

I really like the map idea, I have no idea where most counties are anyway (even though I voted yes, before reading the thread...I'm dumb sometimes). Maps are cool.

yep.

Why can't you ask all people from Ontario to rename their towns so that the (fictional) town of Townie in Countya would become "[Countia] Townie"

instead of that you could just have a drop box and people would choose which county to assinge it to, understandable there may be some mistakes but all in all it should be 95% correct

and they could be corrected by mods or suggestions by members maybe?

THe LDB shouldn't be used to "Find " anything. If you can't find it yourself, you need to do more investigation.
The LDB is crap, get rid of it ; most folks don't "Need" the LDB to find locations.
If you don't know a county or township, you've got problems right away.
What do you want a treasure map?

The LDB is a place to combine information, stories, and photos about a specific place.

It is not a treasure map.

What's the point of having the names of the towns then if people are suppost to find it themselves, might aswell organize the locations by type of location(which actually isn't a bad idea could organize all the hospitals by hospitals and factories by factories[click like a button for that option].. could be another option.. but not the main thing)? And even if you are suppost to find it yourself, I'm sure you like to go to places just to see it even if someone else found it first right?

I know where counties are, I just don't know every tiny village, town, hamlet in each county, which is why you need to break out a map each time... this is why organization into county subheadings would help a lot...

Dukes, if you can name every town and village, off the top of your head, in your county then I'd be impressed.

Apparently you can't recognize dripping sarcasm either;

That being said, although I think the LDB is a hell of a lot of fun, it's mainly for the photos and the mindless banter.

As far as it's use a a "guide", forget it, I believe it's there to say "this exists". There are places I never knew about which were 20 miles from my hometown.

I saw mention of King's Park Psychiatric on Long Island, and was thrilled.
So we woke up early , got in the vehicle, and drove there.
So to speak; even though we had offers for advice on directions /access points, we ignored it. We did a drive and find. And in this case we didn't find.
The hotels in the Fallsburg area are a prime example; we didn't take directions, we just went!

It forces you to learn; Between researching places locally I'm interested in and researching ldb locations, I've become quite a history buff.
Corny as it sounds, the LDB has done more for me that point the way to an old building, it's given me an even greater interest in history than I already had.

Ultimately, I don't need a street address; I just need to know it exists in the first place.
