Lat/Long in LDB
< on 4/6/2005 2:57 AM >

With the cool new features offered by Google Maps, I introduce:

LATITUDE / LONGITUDE AVAILABLE IN THE LDB

If a location has Lat/Long, a text will appear in the Physical area that lets you link directly to a map.

To add Lat/Long to a location, edit the location's details and type in the Lat/Long numbers. If you don't know them, a handy helping tool is provided (click 'Help me find them' under Latitude).

To see a sample location, click here:

Pretty Awesome. I assume you have to edit the location to see what the actual lat/long coordinates are if you don't want to go use the google maps?

thats cool, only problem i can see is if you post the lat/long, more people will be able to find the location and possibly ruin it for everyone

Now that is pretty cool!

(Since when has Google maps staring giving aerial views instead of showing an old fashioned map?)

I think this was done in anticipation of the LDB going L3 only, though.

Nice feature again, Av. More to amuse us with.

So, the street address is done away with to be replaced with a map of the area. Well, this is kinda contradictory.

Hmm....couldn't get it to work...Used the little find it utility...

http://maps.google...orado&spn=0.025055,0.038640&hl=en

This is the google map but when I sub it in your tool I get an error "this is not a google map url"

Mmmm...kay

Then I tried to enter the decimal lat/long info, because it's obvious in the URL and get this instead of the map page:

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=0.025055,0.03864&spn=0.00001,0.00001&hl=en

which is pretty useelss...

I'm not complaining, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing, but I could be wrong.

I see the problem: You didn't double-click inside the map to set the proper location. Please follow the directions step-by-step next time.

I did try that, I re centered the location by clicking the 4 arrow icon and selecting the location on the map - then I clicked the link to this page button, it generated the same link though.

No shit av - you click right in the middle of the big bend on this road - double click your nuts off - click link to this page - it's not frickin working.

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=39.532227,-106.396283&spn=0.025055,0.038640&hl=en

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=39.532013,-106.396837&spn=0.025055,0.038640&hl=en

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=39.532013,-106.396204&spn=0.025055,0.038640&hl=en

double clicked all around the damn area - each of these links works in my browser but your tool rejects em.

The create link is generating a maps link with lat long in decimal format, right?

Okay, I'm writing this email as I go though the process...

I go in to edit this location...

http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=21078

I select "help me"

I select CLick here - this link opens:

http://maps.google...aps?hl=en&q=Sidney,Nebraska,

I browse up and to the left to find the main base complex on the map.

I double click the map to center my location.

I click Link to this page.

I copy the info in the address bar:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Sidney,Nebraska,&ll=41.218628,-103.104357&spn=0.100220,0.154561&hl=en

and paste it into step 6 of the helper.

I click DONE and it works...dammit.

Let me try with Gilman again...

http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=20133

Help...google map comes up - i go to gilman.... Double click...Link to this page:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Gilman,CO&ll=39.531952,-106.397074&spn=0.025055,0.038640&hl=en

and it works again...damn...okay...nevermind.

I think the problem with gilman was that when I originally launch maps.google it is looknig for Eagle County, CO and just gave me a big map of the US, then I zoomed in to the main location so it still had that invalid eagle county info in there somehow. When I got the big map and just typed in gilman, CO and centered from there it worked okay.

Okay, I love this feature, it's great, I'm going through and adding it to a bunch of my locations...it works great.

1 beef though - when you click the link to see the location it defaults to the closest zoom. Which usually results in a "no data available" in satellite image, or in Colorado a big gray square...any chance you could set default zoom at 2 or 3 instead of 1? Or better yet give us the option when we sub the link?

You should only select "Use Satellite View" when the satellite image is working at closest zoom.

That's obvious, and what I'm doing, but under denver check out stapleton control towers link...real useful, sure, you can zoom out and figure out where it is but when you click the link from the LDB it just loads a big gray page.

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=39.78833,-104.880775&spn=0.00001,0.00001&hl=en

I was able to move around my center position to get something more useful, just had to jig it around some.

But here's another example:

Oh YES! I'm off to move the co-ordinates of my locations from the description to the new fields. Stupid question: what projection/co-ordinate system are you using? WGS84, hopefully?
