There was no "discussion". Talk to sulfur-burnin' cjb over there.

UEM has a no vandalism (ergo, no B&E) policy and we adhere strictly to it. We don't wanna fuck up our favourite locations by giving police or others reasons to seal them more securely than they already are.

Plus, cops and other persons of authority here in Quebec/Montreal are fuckin' nuts most of the time. In the few encounters (all I can remember were non-UE related incidents) they behaved quite consistently in a predjudiced, alarmist, and mostly irrational fashion.

I would NOT want to get caught melting my way into a closed off tunnel by a Montreal cop. They'd probably beat me up, and I'm a bilingual white guy, I'd hate to think what'd happen if you were anglophone or in any way not caucasian.

Tux is right on both counts. First, no B&E in any way - which makes us kinda dumb in a way. When we went back to the Brewery three weeks ago our regular entrance had been boarded off, so we had to go around a long way and had to resort to our physical prowess in order to get in. On the way out we realized that someone had cut a nice convenient hole in the fence. Hehe. But no, we will never advocate B&E, although just because it's a big no-no doesn't mean there shouldn't be any discussion about it.

Second, the cops here *are* nuts. They look okay, but... I've seen a cop hand out candy on Halloween; then again, he was literally throwing the chocolate bars at the kids. I shit you not. Although I doubt there would be dangerous physical violence associated with the capture of an urban explorer melting his way into a target, there would be some roughing up, and perhaps some unfortunate destruction of equipment... They're just friendly like that 'round here.

Wotan's right, purely theoretical discussion of B&E should be allowed. Certainly nothing like cjb's post (i.e "I will provide you with equipment for breaking and entering" but purely theoretical stuff.

Just sayin'

I've heard stories about people being beaten by the Metro cops here in Montreal for jumping the turnstiles. It makes me worried about what would happen if one was caught in the Metro tunnels themselves.

The metro security guards are not cops, though. They carry no weapons and, overall, operate in smaller, more confined areas where tons of people walk around. So they're a bit tense when the shit hits the fan. Actually, most security guards I've met or worked with are assholes (no offense to you if you're a guard, I don't know you!) with a couple of notable exceptions.

But hey, the key word in your post was "if"... hehehe.

It's not that we won't use any entrance that's been "explorer-made." But, first of all, we don't carry any tools to make such entrances. If they can't prove we made the hole or cut the fence, then we get off with a trespassing fine. And second, if an abandoned building has been "securified" to a seemingly extreme point, then we usually rethink our approach to the target.

One of our members has a VERY good reason to not want to be caught. It's a calculated risk he takes every time he comes along.

Also, yes, of COURSE we fear being arrested. Having a criminal record limits your options in life, and we would MUCH prefer to simply be fined and sent on our way than arrested and charged. Seems like common sense to me.

As such, we have to be a little more creative in our entrances than simply smashing, burning, or prying our way in. Everyone has thier own interpretation of what UE is, but to me, it doesn't include anything destructive. I'm proud that my hobby goes against convention (and, incidentally, laws that unfairly limit us) but also that it doesn't hurt anyone.

I don't have a problem with the people who do the prying and jimmying so I don't have to, in fact, I owe them a debt for allowing me easier access, but it's not something I'm willing to undertake on my own.

Well, talking about B&E is allowed... but there's a big difference between:

I dont approve of B&E. I prefer to go in through the window.

vs:

I took out my sulfur torch and ripped the grate off.

You can't be charged for B&E if you didn't do any B&E.

And besides, there's almost always more than one way in. If you resort to B&E you're just being lazy and dumb.

If a metro rent-a-cop beats you up you can have him arrested for assault since a metro cop has no right to assault a person, only the right to detain them until the police show up. Also if a metro cop confinscates your stuff that is theft because they do not have the power to take stuff from you unless its illegal wich they must hand over to the police.

Nice summary. So if anyone here happens to do B&E on a regular basis, they should keep it to themselves. I mean, perhaps that beginning urban explorers are reading this forum, and I don't think it's very responsible to give them the impression that whipping out a crowbar is routine or even necessary in urban exploration.

Note, this isn't targeted at you, cjbsexx, I just hope that no hurt or ill consequences arise from someone reading the posts here - hence the forum rules.

yeah, some of the rent-a-cops or even the actual fuzz would love to nail you for even the e part of a b&e - i've heard horror stories especially about the quebec police, and my lack of ability en francais keeps me the hell on my side of the border. sad, because montreal does have some damn nice looking areas, judging by these and other pics i've seen

Love those pix cjbsexx. They're great.

Personally, I don't think that there should be any discussion about specific ways into a place. If you think you need more specific information about access, I really think that's what private messages should be used for.

If you think about it, there is no need to discuss it openly, even hypothetically.

If I were to go to a specific site, say up in Montreal (where you guys have lots of great places) I would contact somebody in the know. Thats the great thing about these forums, we can network.

I think Mokonax is right. Having to discuss specific access points and methods is just being lazy (and unprofessional).

I'm not aiming this post at anyone in particular either.

You know you have no life when you steal pictures, make up a story to impress your friends and also, write that those pictures are copyrighted to you and that you cannot use them elswewhere.

Anyway, for you guys' interest, those pictures were stolen from the AMT (Agence Métropolitaine de Transport) site.

http://www.amt.qc.ca/grandsprojets/metrolaval/envergure/cotelaval.asp

Quite a nice fake story cjbsexx!

Oh, makes me wonder how much of this is real too:
>I recommand it to everyone, exploring that tunnel was one of the greatest if not the best exploration trip I ever made, except maybe the catacombs of Vieux-Montreal

You know the pictures you posted (about the catacombs, yeah right) were probably from the Wellington tunnel, which is nothing like catacombs as it was used by cars...
