|  | | | Not to start another flame war over this, but... There's been some issues involving moderators reading/posting in private boards that they aren't invited/subscribed to.
While I understand why moderators have access to these boards, it should be understood that whoever created said board is also a moderator of that board. It should be their job to control the content, not that of the other mods.
That said, it's my personal opinion that if a moderator isn't specifically a member of a private board, they shouldn't have access to read it or to post in it. I do believe that an administrator should have the ability to do this, just so that if things get really out of control, there's somebody who can put a stop to this.
So what do you guys think? Keep mods out of your private board, or should they be allowed to roam free?

Aren't giving a good image of UE? I'm not even going to get into what a mess this sort of rule would cause.
How is it that suggestions for this kind of stuff keeps coming up? Hasn't everybody learned what a flamewar this kind of thing can be?
I can understand deleting stuff that is against the rules, but if you got rid of stuff that could potentially make UE look bad, we'd be deleting half the private boards out there.

For a while there were multiple "Drug users" private boards, and while I don't care what someone does to their own body, it's not great to have a bunch of threads about where to buy crack (I'm not saying that happened, just that it wouldn't have looked good and would be an example of a private board needing moderation). Av doesn't have time to police all the private forums, and I think there does need to be some oversight.
In reality I'd say most of the mods don't care about private boards. There's only a few boards I frequent, mainly because I'm interested in the topic. I check other private boards occasionally, but I seldom if ever post anything or interfere.

Sadly, there have been more than a couple of mods that seem to 'care' about private boards they aren't invited to participate in.
An idea that would work:
The onus on moderating the board is up to the creator of said board.
Moderators should only have 'read-only' access to the board.
Creators of private boards accept full responsibility for the content posted on their board.
Moderators can monitor content posted; violations of forum rules can be punished by a suspension of posting for everyone on the board.
Further violations result in the inability of the board creator to create any more private boards, and a new moderator is appointed.
Any further violations will result in complete deletion of the board.
Also, forum mods need to agree, and in a public place, that they will hold ANYTHING they read on a private board to which they are not a member of in confidence.
For example, if someone on here posted in some private board that he had cheated on his significant other, and then a mod that read it ran to that S/O and spilled the beans, that's a gross violation of privacy.
Punishment for breaking that rule can be doled out by Av; up to and including loss of moderator status.
(I know Av will *never* go for any of this: "It's too much work to code." Also, his moderators are above the law. He holds steadfast that that's not the case, but we all know in reality that's not true.)
(Also, exkal, I'm sure this will get locked. Anything that doesn't maintain the status quo around here always does.)

The mods will always have read access to any private board. Sorry, but that's just how it has to be. We need to monitor the content posted on our site and ensure it doesn't violate our rules or hosting agreements, or causes us legal concern.
If needed, I will simply ask the mods to not post in private boards unless invited to. There's no need to restrict them. If I ask them not to, they won't.

Fair enough. What will you do then if a moderator violates this and does it anyway? 3 strikes and your out seems to work well elsewhere...

I think the mod in question should go before a special council of UE elders, who will determine if they are a witch by binding their hands and throwing them into the river. If they sink and drown, they're innocent, and if they float, we should burn them at the stake.

Ya know, actually, I don't get this. Why do people think they can be a dick on the Internet and there's no real life repercussions, or that their Internet self is somehow separate and they are blameless for anything they say on here? I realize that if I post something assholeian, it reflects on my actual self. But when the crazy train gets a'chuggin I feel like I need to respond, and sometimes the sarcastic flamage comes out as a defense mechanism. I don't excuse it, but I don't make a habit of it either.
Anyway, shit, I'm not gonna inf anyone's treehouse if they're going to get this pissed off. Also, just for future reference, I'm done with this one -- but don't ever assume anyone's silence is a sign of agreement.
