Av owns the site. He pays for all of this, and spent his time making all of this possible. Know your role.

I actually think the whole 'pay to have your name changed' isn't such a bad idea.

LiveJournal makes users pay a whopping 15 bucks US for a "rename token".

I think a nominal fee to change your name isn't a bad thing.

Can't afford it? Don't want to pay it?

Shoulda' thought of that before you changed your name!

I think a small paypal payment of 2 or 3 bucks is a great way to solve this.
It will stop the abuse of the system. It will pay for Av's time to go into the MySQL and change it. It will encourage users to be positive about changing their names.

(I know there will be lots of people on here that will turn into Chicken Little at the thought of paying a whopping two bucks or so... but they seem to bitch about anything that involves paying for anything that they think should be free.)

e.n., you have a very valid point. right now, av has to take HIS time to change your name if it is within the non-changing period. US$2.00 does not seem like such a bad idea if during that time you want to change your name. who besides av has the time, heart, and thoughtfulness to run a FREE (because you DO NOT HAVE TO DONATE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO) site for our enjoyment. you don't like the rules, don't use the site or expect use of the site. not trying to seem callous, but this is something that av does from his heart, not for his pocket. give him a break and don't bitch about the small stuff...

...we're a bunch of non-conforming explorers, who generally break the rules on a daily basis, and yet we sit here and try to enact rules and regulations, speaking about rights and the like.

The thing is, when UER started, there were no rules, no mods, and not even a "delete post" feature.

All the rules and regulations we have now have arisen out of need, because someone abused the system and it became necessary. Just like stores today all have electronic inventory control tags on products because a small part of the population shoplifts.

I liken this to the "people who don't vote can't bitch about who's elected" argument. If you don't donate to help Av out with his expenses, just sit back and enjoy what is free on this board. If you have a respectable complaint, send a PM to Av personally and ask him nicely if he would change it for you. Starting the thread with "why is it that we can only change our handle's once ever two months? do we lack the power to create individuality here? or is it just that, well, if i change my nick every three weeks or so to suit my mood, it might annoy the moderating powers that be" is not the way to win friends and get what you want. Not that donating gives you a right to bitch and moan, but at least you're helping Av out with his expenses.

This is a really silly argument - It's Av's site, he can do what he wants, end of story.

Sorry, Q - but I can't even really sympathise. People on MSN who change their entire nick every day really piss me off, because I can never tell who they are. You can always change the little thing below your avatar - is that not enough?

That's true AV, and I do believe I agreed with that point of yours, that it arose out of need.

But I still find it rather hilarious, and ironic.

Why is marijuana not legal? Why is marijuana not legal? Its a natural plant that grows in the dirt. You know what's not natural, 80 year old dudes with hardons. Thats not natural, but we got pills for that. We're dedicating all our resources to keeping the old guys erect but we're puttin people in jail for smoking something that grows in the dirt.

I have an idea...

Like the real world, let's make people who want to change their names go before a Justice (aka Av), and pay a fee to have it changed.

There. No rights violated. Just like the public world.

And pay $83 for the service, wait 4-6 weeks, and have to post your change of name information in a local newspaper. Great idea!

[Edit: If you need to change your user name more than once every three months you have problems only a doctor can fix.]

I love how people demand their "right to vote" or comment on forum policy by insulting Av or the mods, and then complain that they have no say and no rights when their demands mysteriously aren't met.

It's like going to court, cussing out the judge, calling the cops a bunch of donut-gobbling pigs, and then demanding that your traffic ticket be dropped or your license renewed immediately. For some reason that doesn't tend to work.

I've heard there's this one word, I think it starts with a P and has magical properties, and supposedly it helps you get things you want.

The irony that explorers would even think they can discuss rights is hilarious. We don't have the right to be entering abandoned buildings and taking pictures...

Try and stick to your own legal system and speak for yourself.

Here I have the absolute right to roam, wherever I want and take as many pictures as I like.

What's the point of constant name changing? Isn't it easier to change your avatar instead? There's lots of images one could/find make and use depending how they feel or what mood they're in or whatever it is that makes them want to do it.

Seriously, everyone on my MSN list changes their name like 6 times a day, we really don't need threads on UER that have about 15 user names, but only 2 users posting. how about this, I'm going to ask GMail if I can change my GMail Address. rather than create a new one, I'd like them to actually change mine because I don't think I picked a good name, but I still want all my SPAM to find it's way to my inbox. Personally, I wouldn't even allow the name changing at all if it were my board (boy are you guys happy it's not!)

Sorry if this post sounds a bit snarky but I haven't slept yet and I'm still trying to figure out if the original post in this thread is a joke or not...

Hey, I'm one of those bastards that got the right to change names taken away. You should have been around the forums then, good times. But yeah it got really old quick and obviously was a problem. Just keep promoting U2 for the next couple of months, It's the holiday season, I'm sure someone bought the Cd because of your name and Avatar.
