| | | Well, I hate to shut you down, but picking isn't something you can learn in 10 minutes. Some locks are cracker-jack easy, but the locks that matter are typically 7-pin tumbler locks that are a bitch to open. At least in my experience. Here's a place to start, though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockpicking r0sie is the resident expert on this sort of thing... hopefully he'll chime in here... | | | Take a locksmithing course, or a security containers course. And pay attention to detail. After that it's all gravy. Where did you get your picks?

| | | You could plan a UE(well not really urban) of Dagobah, find Yoda and convince him to train you in the ways of the Force... then you could use your Jedi powers and lockpicking would be easy. You pretty much need Jedi powers to lockpick without just fluking it or lucking out. In my opinion. I'm not saying its impossible. Certainly nothing is impossible. Good luck. Seriously though, once you understand whats going on inside the lock practice practice practice. Theres plenty of info at http://www.lockpicking101.com explore those forums.

| | | The MIT guide to lockpicking (linked above by Mark) is the best resource available. If you have the money, I would invest in a clear practise lock.
Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door. |

ROTFL that one really got me rolling on the floor. Thanks I needed that. I have been playing with picks for a few years now and I have to admit I have never really had need to use them aside from one or 2 exceptions. And out of the roughly 400 sites I have explored, that means that picks are only needed in .5% of cases. "Yay I am so excited, I just my scalpel, now I can do brain surgery. plx l3mm3 kn0w how too use dem." Before I even touched picks I read a large amount about them. I found out how locks work, I found out how lockpicks work.

| | | Honestly - the key to lockpicking (snigger) is practice like mad. I can pick brand new cheapo locks in under 5 min - and relatively worn locks in under half an hour, but give me anything slightly pick-resistant, or even good padlocks, and I'm there for an hour with no luck. Reduxzero is the man for lockpicking (in Alberta, at least) - I've seen him do seven pin tumblers in under 3 min, big dollar supposedly pick-resistant ones, every variety of padlock, deadbolt and passage set known to man. He spends a lot of time practicing, though - has a huge box of locks in his basement that he practices on a regular basis with. He is probably one of the most dedicated (as far as time goes) explorers I know.

| | | Use the MIT reference afore mentioned. Pretty much you need to start on easy locks in order to get a "feel" for things. I'd recommend going out and buying some "high" security (this means low security) blue and silver masterlocks. Don't start with ace hardware locks or anything that says "maximum security" (that means medium/high security) If there is any writing anywhere on the package that says anything about spool pins or mushrooms or anything fishy stay away. Be persistent. When the lock cracks its a great feeling. You can order practice locks also and they're great, the ones where you can actually see the pins as you rake them. The practice lock is probably the most important tool there is for learning. Good luck! edit: Something else I feel important to add is that when selecting picks, though it sounds like you already have, dont skimp on quality. Get the re-inforced handles and the twist flex tension wrench. Personally, I buy all my supplies from www.southord.com and I've experienced great service with them. | | | I managed to get my picks from a local cutlery (knives, swords, etc.) place in a mall. They were hush-hush and had them under the counter, and it took me a long while to find these guys. I definately recommend going with the more expensive if you have a choice between two sets of equal size. I spend $30 on a 20-piece set and they all ended up bent and mangled after a few locks - but I spent $30 on a 5-piece set, and they are still working great today. I would recommend to start picking up the cheapest deadbolt from Home Depot. Weiser or something is thier brand. Problem is, after a bit your subconcious learns the pattern of the lock - so you can consistantly pick it in under 60 seconds and you're no longer really learning anything.
