Freak, I've had some experience building gliders and rubber powered aero-planes. Balsa wood and tissue paper is suprisingly sturdy and lightweight. A spray on varnish provides a thicker wing surface if your concerned about debris. You can get small battery operated motors that would provide enough lift to get into a thermal. Just program the computer to restart the motor if the plane gets too low. Navigation is a bit tricky, but if you could get close enough you could fly it straight and just use on of those radio nose-cap dealies to track it. Maybe when I come up north this summer, I'll bring a kit or two up for you... I've got a number at my parents house.
