| | Trusted star and maybe a new one < on 10/2/2004 5:46 AM >
| | | OK So trusted people are people who are known by moderators to be upstanding people. Which is all fine and good for those around a moderator. However for those not around a Mod, well that doesnt allow people to go, "hey hes in ____ area maybe I should ask or get in contact with him. I suggest a respected, or recomended person Star. For instanace I know someone most of you dont know her but she lurks and post occasionally. Andrea, is not only a great UE person, she is also taking a major in historic preservation. I dare say she shows moral values on par or higher then Jester. Mainly because she wont go into anything that is to difficult. However she knows her history is a great person and very very nice. AbandonedSC, although new to the board would be someone that I would also add. He has several people in his group, holds pretty high moral values and I know sevral people that can vouch for him. InPhenity, although I dont know him for very long, is another highly UE moral person. Since this was my idea and I know many of you will think of me as a star whore for posting this I'll do this. If you do make something like this I wish not to have the star. I think people should be chosen by nomination of at least two people on the board. Reviewed by the Mods, and have added to the community weather on the DB or through there own site. Anyone agree, disagree?

Not sure about the star idea but I can say from the comments she has posted to the Scottish locations, Andrea is indeed a very nice person. Chris...

| | | I have a trusted star. No mods live in my area and none of the mods are big buddies of mine. I just helped one out. So I don't totally agree with that you are saying. I think we have enough stars as is. There are a lot of great knowledgeable and respected people on this board but I don’t see the need to point out every one of them with a star.

So, please kindly and publicly request your 'helping' star to be removed. As you pointed out, there is no need for it.

I helped out another member on the forum, but not because he was a mod. I wasn’t even expecting to get the star in the first place. BPM, I wouldn’t mind but the trusted star and Mark’s idea for the new star are different. Mark says that Andrea is a great person and very knowledgeable in history. I don’t know Andrea personally but I’m sure she is a great person. But I don’t think we should have stars for people who have good values and are friendly or knowledgeable in some field. A lot of the people on the forum already qualify for that. I don't think there is a need for the trusted star or the gay pride star or any new stars. As someone one said (I think it's Mike) , it’s like a pissing contest but with stars.

| | | I still think it serves a useful purpose, but if people are going to complain about not being able to get one because they aren't near a mod, then maybe it should go... A "web of trust" like Mark is sorta getting at would make sense, but I think doing it informally by asking for a reference if you really are unsure about someone would work ok. | | | I think the Trusted Star makes everyone who does not have one feel like they are "not to be trusted". I think stars would only really be useful if they were all voluntary - just flags to indicate something about yourself. If they are assigned, then it just gets into this whole "I have this one and you don't, nya nya nya" thing. Then again - maybe I'm not to be trusted (I only founded UEA over two years ago, started UEDB.org that was the idea behind UER's UEDB, done one hell of a lot of exploring, went out of my way to meet up with a lot of the explorers across Canada to get to know them in person) - that's exactly why the stars are silly. The only star I have is one that I selected to have. [last edit 10/2/2004 6:40 PM by Anymouse - edited 1 times]

I see what you're saying here, but I don't think "no trusted star" should equal "not trustworthy". At least, I would hope people wouldn't assume that. But, eh, this all seems like a rather large non-issue... I don't base my decision to trust someone on a star or not, I either trust them because I've known them for a long time online, or I know someone who has met them. I stayed for a week with Av while I was in Toronto, and I didn't rape or pillage - went exploring, etc. - I thought it went well, but apparantly I am not trusted. That's fine - some people take a lot longer to get to trust. I'm sure Professor Chaos had spent months with one of the moderators, got to know eachother, etc.

I think it's more likely that this is the reason he hasn't given you a trusted star after your visit...

Makes sense that if he doesn't think we need it, he wouldn't bother to give another one out. Doesn't it ?

Ooh, if we're going to play the name game.. I've met Slim Jim, Panic, and Ninj (all of which I believe are considered highly-respected members of the UE community).. as well as Jester and Av, who are newer to the UE (online) community than myself - but are immensely more popular.. and then there's the people that I am good friends with and explore with on a regular basis, Kay O Sweaver (on Ninj's Timeline), Mr. Sable (admin of the MSN group that preceded UER as the world global forum - ask Ninj, Max Action, etc.), Reduxzero, etc.. Someone could be very respected at another website or forum - like, say, Mr. Sable - and people will treat them like a dumb noob here. On UEA, if someone respected came onto our board (like Siologen of the Cave Clan), they were instantly granted moderator/secure/trusted status. I say abolish the stars. It only serves to treat people that don't deserve it like they are inferior.
