Does it go against all important UE ethics to take things from a UE location and donate them to a museam, if that location has historical value?
I'm not saying I've EVER taken ANYTHING from a UE location, but there are some things I was thinking about taking, depending on the reaction I get from this post and donateing them to the museam.

I know that when a HUGE building at Ridge Home burnt down the Colorado historical society took a plaque that survived the fire. Museums may want things that you find in locations, but I think if they even took it, they are still stealing from someone. Because that property does belong to someone somewhere...

You can always just tell them it's there and they can go get it themselves.
I also wouldn't base my morals so heavily on what other people on a message board think. Do what you feel is right, not what others tell you or bully you into thinking is right.

Sometimes it's justified by saying they're saving it from looters and treasure hunters, but really they're just doing the same thing for academic gain.
You could photograph it 'in situ' and take measurements and such, ie: the distance in inches from north and east walls, orientation, depth, angle, et cetera, et cetera...
If you can't resist remove the object, please take a photo of the thing in context. It'd even be a nice gesture to leave a photo of what was removed in the place it was found.
yeah, or just tell the museum about it.
If you or someone you knew (who would go with you) had a degree in archaeology or an affiliation with a reputable museum, then it might be a different story entirely.
You guys know that Industrial Archaeology is a legitimate credit course in UK universities taught by real professors and there are all kinds of dry texts on the subject, don'tcha?

| | | | First, I'd try and contact the owner or any demolition/renovation crews that might be working on the building. They would probably be able to tell you if any curators have expressed interest in the site. If nothing comes up, then you can give your local historical society or museum a call and ask to speak to a curator.
Reminds me of the first time I went to the Pabst Brewery. As I was walking through it, I kept wondering to myself how much historical significance some of the things I saw had. I thought it a shame that they would most likely end up in a dumpster.
The next time I went back I noticed signs posted on various objects that read something to the effect of, "DO NOT DISCARD! THIS ITEM HAS BEEN CATALOGUED FOR SHIPMENT TO THE NATIONAL BREWER'S MUSEUM."

| | | | there was at one time a really cool mural in the basement of one of the bigger buildings at king's park,part of which was hacked out and put in a "art" gallery. Now when you go there,it's a big hole in the best part of the mural,and all the future explorers won't get to see this part of it.
My vote goes to the day before the building gets leveled,any thing sooner destroys the experence for others.

Not intended as a slight to you MD, but this is also the rationalization that many grave robbers use when they loot archeological sites. We've found Pre-Columbian graves in a region where it was reported none existed, and still haven't told anyone where it is to prevent looters from destroying them.
