Members can't be "deleted", because it would ruin the associations between their posts and them. We'd have to delete their posts too.

However, I could close the account after 6 months of inactivity and then it simply disappears from the member list and stuff...

One question: Why?

If it's not saving server space or anything, why deactivate the account if the person might, one day, come back and use it?

I'd be curious to know how many of our thousands of members are not really members... people that signed up, poked around and haven't been back in half a year or more. It would at least give us a more accurate idea of the user base that is actually still showing up once in awhile.

thats what http://www.uer.ca/forum_stats.asp?fid=1 is for.

If you will look closely there is a "Number of active users" stat which shows how may people have been on in the last 30 days, so in essence we already have an accurate idea of the user base that is actually still showing up once in awhile.

I agree with Jester fully. the forum says 1000's of members, but I really see the same 300 or so post. if not delete members, it would be cool to see acurate member activity info

"Number of registered users: 5257
Number of contributing users (post in last 30 days): 622
Number of active users (seen in last 30 days): 1357"

im willing to bet half of that number hasn't posted in 6 months

Hiding in plain sight huh Av? Also, some people come here to view posts but rarely post themselves.

I think they should be deleted. If they havent logged-in in 6 months, they probably forgot their passwords and for some reason dont have the same e-mail, lost interest, became too poor to use the internet, or have fallen sick/dead.

If we delete them, it will at least give the new members more names to choose from. I dont like the thought of joining a forum and having to make my name "HairyTheTaco3567" since all the other good names have been chosen by people who dont even use the service anymore.

i dont see where it hurts anybody to not delete the accounts. so they havent posted or been on in 6 months...one guy just came back who sed he hadnt posted in 6 months...maybe they got sick or have been having a lot of trouble in their lives and this site didnt take top priority. it doesnt hurt anybody to not have their accounts deleted, i dont see why its a problem at all.

Yeah.. Is there a technical reason to delete the accounts Av ? Are they doing no harm as is ?

Also, when I first joined I went an easy six months without posting anything to the forums at all. I posted a lot of locations mind you. A country in fact.

But if it's done on a 'login' basis I suppose it doesn't matter if the user doesn't post at all.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

I don't think the problem is whether or not people post. It's whether or not they log in with their account. If they haven't logged in within 6 months, their account is abandoned and free game for exploration...

you say that like you haven't had that happen before. they should be deleted after 1 year instead of 6 months.

yeh, cause something crazy could happen, and they might not be able to access their computer or something. When they came back to their account, they would find out it doesn't exist anymore, that would be painful. I've expereienced that type of situation before! It's not cool.

Two sides of the coin... One of my accounts was deleted while I was gone to baghdad. Its sad because I wont go there anymore because I cant log in again and since my name and info are taken as dead space I can not make another login. However I dont have tons of need to be on.

On the other hand I wouldnt care if they were deleted from a year of not logging on.

Well the Baghdad scenario makes a lot of sense, there should just be a "leave" option you can select so everyone knows you are away. People who don't give a damn won't check the leave option and they will be deleted... plus I think its pretty obvious to the admin who will be back and who is just someone using the account to see pictures, contribute nothing, then vanish for an eternity, why leave their account here? A lot of cool usernames are sitting stagnant and someone who might actually want them can't use them... and the process gets worse and worse.

It could become like creating an AIM SN or a Yahoo Email address...

Jake857465684.... who wants that? All because the user jake has been gone for a year, is really named bob, and doesnt care at all.

So...

those are my main reasons.
