Yahoo news is bringing explorers in the news again, personally i dont like the extra attention, I'm curious what you all think, the comments are interesting, not a fan of these people who say tear it all down, one guy says its never been fashionable to trespass till now

here is the link

Apparently that DID just happen. And I AM proud of it

yes, i know, I just hate the misinformation many of these tend to have, luckily this one doesn't seem to have too much bad info

also how many of you guys move stuff around for a good photo? (be honest!)

Apparently that DID just happen. And I AM proud of it

I don't bother in a haunted house. The ghost moves stuff for me.

The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight"
So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house,
"Hey! What gives you the right?" http://www.flickr.com/photos/evman/

Maybe once out of every 500 or so shots I'll kick away an offending Gatorade bottle or add an empty beer bottle of my own. That's about it. In Situ is the way to go.

Like Ed I've moved distracting shit/trash out of the frame often, probably doing every other photographer after me a huge favor. But moving stuff to create your own version of the place sucks. You should do still lifes in a studio if you're such a control freak.

Nobody ever went in an abandoned building before 1993. Nobody.

After George Bush invented urban exploring, only then did anyone have the courage to set foot in an abandonment.

This is the easiest form of news-trashyness....because it costs nothing to produce and this loser already took all the pictures.

Oh, and when you turn 40...you need to get rid of frat-boy shirts.

All the treasure are belong to me. We got a slat, for that!

I thought Al Gore invented urban exploring. He invented the internet immediately afterwards so he had a place to post pictures and brag to all of his buddies about his urbex ninja skillz.

(In an unrelated story, I read on the internet that Dick Cheney ate a live, human baby during the second vice-presidential debates. Truth.)

Andre Govia's long list of locations is insane and has to rival any other explorer (of that genre) out there that I've ever seen. I'm not stoked to see it in the news but the guy is at least worthy of the attention.
As to the manipulation of scenes, I used to feel that you shouldn't move anything. I've long since changed my mind and my ways and go for the picture that I want, rather than the settle for the scene that presents itself. Of course, there has to be balance. Ideally I wouldn't have to change anything, but I have no qualms moving something like a piece of crap particle board desk that is blocking a piece of amazing architecture for example. I didn't come to take pictures of particle board desks so why not move it?

I'm sure this will spark a huge debate about purity vs. artistic vision and a bunch of people with jump all over me. so, go for it.

Nah I agree. Unless you are the first person in since it closed, things have already been moved. Even while a place is shutting down, things will be moved and packed up by workers or the owners. Rarely are things ever in there natural positions.
I move things all the time.

I started around 1977.
There are quite a few old timers on this site.

I dig on Andre Govia's photography. This article definitely didn't make my toes curl the way some that I've read recently do........**cough**placehacking**cough**

as for moving stuff around, I totally do if I get inspired to for a photo.......and god help you if you happen to be exploring with me and there's a bunch of champagne flutes, a record player, a chair, and a 1992 edition of the Bangkok times laying around. (guess it's the set-designer/costumer in me)
I am very careful with things that I do decide to move around though. 1.
