| | | I feel as though I don't wear a mask as often as I should... < on 9/19/2013 1:41 AM >
| | | And it's quite bothersome. I own a full face respirator and I should just use it...I have used simple dust masks a hand full of times but out of the thousand times or so that I have explored places I never wear anything...what are the chances that I have already fucked myself over you think? I should start wearing a mask more...

| | | A full face respirator is stupid for exploring for multiple reasons, particularly if you're taking pictures while doing so. A half face mask with cartridges has an ample protection factor and takes up WAY less space. That said, I can't even remember the last time I've brought mine anywhere. I really only feel like I need it in places that are dry and loaded with loose asbestos, like for example the basement of the Salmon building at Norwich (RIP). There is no shortage of uninformed opinions online about how much asbestos exposure can doom you, but the simple fact is that no one knows.

| | | Dust mask for particulates works great. The simple disposable ones. For asbestos you want a N-100, P-100 or R-100 NIOSH rated mask. These are colored purple usually. the 3M6000 is an example of the one I used. [last edit 9/19/2013 3:56 PM by Adventure Crime - edited 1 times]

| | | Send4Help has a great write up if you follow his first link... and like a previous poster said, no one really knows/ everyone has their own opinion. How often do you explore and how long have you explored without a mask? How many locations, etc. I invested in a mask about a year or two ago when I really started getting into exploring more and try to wear it as much as possible. Sometimes I'm good with it and other times I'm not, but honestly I think it's mostly unnecessary except when you are really climbing around underground tunnels and actually scraping against asbestos piping and crap where there is no ventilation. But like I said, my mentality is "better safe than sorry" so I hope I am not too late or wear it enough now. Most (but not all) people with asbestosis were workers that were around it for years in their job places/ their families that dealt with it all over their husbands clothes when they got home. If you are exploring only here and there, you will probably be fine. But one suggestion is, if you smoke and you explore a lot, quit. It's a good reason to quit.

Well I have been exploring almost as long as I have been photographing which is around 7 years, and rarely ever have worn masks only a few times. I'm just starting to be a little more cautious of it now. I recently quit smoking actually and it's one of the better decisions I have recently mse. Trying to get myself ice and healthy and stay that way as I am right now combating something that is wrong, no idea what it is. Lots and lots of sinus drainage causing nausea and dizziness and what not...blech. I just want to feel better again haha.

| | | This. We already have quite a bit of data out there going on this topic. It sounds like you could benefit from a HALF-mask respirator. A full mask is only necessary in areas where you're at harm from contaminants which are easily absorbed through your eyes. Full masks are more uncomfortable to wear, and have more issues with using things against your face. If you *actually* read through those two threads, instead of just ignoring them, you should find most all of the information you're looking for.
My mine exploring crew members and our associates only use full-masks when the situation calls for it. For example, a uranium mine which was thick with air-laden radon and required full-masks and SCBA breathing aparatus. Otherwise, a half-mask should take care of most of your "respiratory" issues. And there are some really great N95 type disposables out there as well.
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |
