First Major Exploration

So, this past Saturday, I had my first major exploration, which is what prompted me to finally sign up here. On the way to where I work everyday, there's this old abandoned house I pass by, yet I wasn't really aware of it until recently. I checked it out on the way home one day, and determined that there couldn't possible be anyone living there.

I then decided to bring along a friend, and explored the entire thing with her. Needless to say, it was the most fun I've had in quite a while. Unfortunately, I only had my Nexus 7 tablet on me at the time, which I used to record a video while taking pictures simultaneously. It's low quality, so forgive the poorness of these photos. I plan to purchase an actual digital camera soon for really nice shots.

Anyways, some minor bio: I'm 17, and have lived up near DFW for about the past 12 years of my life. Programming has been my main hobby, along with working with technology in general, with Trumpet playing, and more recently, Urban Exploration. I became interested in it when I became aware of all the off-limits areas in my High School, and heard about some maintenance tunnels existing beneath the campus. While I have yet to get into those tunnels ( they're sealed pretty well, but I found the blueprints for them online and determined what tool may be necessary to open them ), I've explored multiple maintenance rooms within the building, along with a good portion of the roof.

That was all about one year ago, and my desire for exploring the abandoned waned for some time due to the inability to easily travel to other nearby abandoned structures, or even scout them out for that matter. Now that I have the freedom of transportation, I've mapped out 5 nearby locations all within 5 minutes of where I live, some with multiple abandoned buildings, including a somewhat large abandoned retirement center.

I plan to soon see all of these locations with a close friend of mine, who I've known for a couple years now. Her and I share pretty much the same interests, and she's the only one who loves Urban Exploration as much as I do, and the only one who shows interest in it that I know, for that matter ( I live in a somewhat boring area, you could say ).

Anyways, a little info on the house. We discovered it to be in a very trashed state, yet it seemed like a completely normal house that I was abandoned one day, all possessions intact. We entered through a window in the back that was already smashed, and we determined either the previous owner went crazy before he left ( strewing his belongings everywhere ), or somebody came in after its abandonment by force by breaking the window, and ruffaging through everything to find valuables to steal. By determining the dates on items, names on bills, and so on, we figured out this guy abandoned the house in May of 2005, for a seemingly unknown reason. He left everything there, including possibly his cat, since we found a dead... something in the kitchen, and lots of old photographs of the owner and his cat. We determined he was in his early 70s, and possibly suffering from PTSD ( we found a magazine concerning post combat stress, and an empty prescription drug bottle of a drug that helped with PTSD. We figured out this through Internet research after we left ). All in all, a very enjoyable experience.

Here are the pictures. Again, bad quality, but better than nothing. Also, I'm skeptical about posting the video anywhere, due to its length and unsureness on how safe / dangerous that may be, since it's incriminating evidence of trespassing. Perhaps somebody could share their thoughts on that?

4) I like the tree growth in this one.

5) We finally get inside the house in this shot.

6) Very blurry on this one, but basically a hallway next to a very thin staircase.

7) Yes, the entire sink is missing. Everything is fine but the kitchen sink.

8) 8 Year old Okra.

9)

10)

11) Possibly the worst room in the house.

12) Giant Fuzzy Dice.

13)

14) Stairs, very blurry.

15) One of the only upstairs shots, since I was overly fascinated with all of the interesting stuff we found up there.

16 There was an old shed in the back, so we checked that out too.

All in all, a rather awesome hour was spent there. We plan to return soon, with a nice camera, to take better shots, explore a couple other sheds that were back there, and re-barricade the front door. I don't have a picture, but there was a wooden bar over the front door from the inside, which I dislodged so I could easily access it in the future. It wasn't until later that I realized that I pretty much made it much, much easier for anybody to get inside, trash the place, scrap from it, etc. So, that will be fixed, along with plans to take better photographs, including one of the dead things, a giant jar of pickles, a box full of dozen of syringes, and other very interesting things.

People have gone to places much, much more incriminating than that here.

Thanks for the welcome!

And that is indeed good to know. I'll probably post it somewhere eventually. Any tips on good cameras to use? Something of good quality, yet cheap in price.

you'll get a million answers asking that.. if you search the forms you should be able to find a number of threads on the topic of picking a camera.

buy a used SLR if you want something cheap and good.

well done on this site, and i am looking forward to seeing you apply your enthusiasm and curiosity to a site a bit larger -- say, an abandoned refinery or factory. look on the forums, and you will soon find some real wonderlands to explore.

Post explores only of places that suck, are trashed or you simply do not care about. Once you are a full member you can make private threads the public cannot see. Until then, protect your locations by avoiding name dropping, photos showing street signs, etc.

..and when the PM's start pouring in after you post a epic location, don't give in to "exchange location for location" deals...unless you really trust them. But, I can tell you, even the so called bad ass explorers can screw it up for you...by say, going in and getting caught and then spilling the beans on how they learned of it...which could possibly land you in trouble with the law.

....trust me...it happens!

Nice start!
Interesting investigation into the history and possible PTSD; a story makes a photo set more enjoyable, IMO.

Thanks for the welcomes and advice, everyone.

I'll look into the SLRs, and keeping my locations secret, unless they're really just that bad.

And while there is an open window, it's all the way in the back, and random passerby who just want to trash the place and screw around will most likely not look beyond the locked front door. Though I could be very wrong.

And I agreed with you, Tenebrae. The whole story aspect of figuring out who this guy was was extra fun on top of the exploring itself. I have a shot of the actual drug bottle, but it has his name and everything.

Plus, I forgot to mention: we also figured out he went to Oklahoma, and died in 2008. His wife still lives there.

Way to go figuring out the history of the house, and the occupant. I tend to glimpse over research in to inhabitants and instead research the history of the site, I suppose in this case the two were pretty intertwined though.

As for the video, that's a tough call, I've been debating posting a few videos of mine as well, sure people post them, but there's a pleasant anonymity created by just posting photos, in that the poster and control the perception of the site a little more carefully. However with videos that control is quickly lost and stuff you may not want to be judged on are now things you are judged on.
