TG Sulfur Plant Urbex (pics getting less nooby)

Finally bought a DSLR, hopefully the pics are getting better!

Focus and a Eclipse, Eclipse had the head torn off for some reason. Both had expired tags.. been there for a while.

Didn't even explore half of it in these pictures! I can only imagine how long it would have taken to explore had the main building(s) still been there..

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

Well, seems like nobody has identified this place yet.. here ya go!

"TEXASGULF. Texasgulf, Incorporated, began as the Gulf Sulphur Company in 1909 in Matagorda County, with its initial mine at the massive Boling Dome in neighboring Wharton County. This mine is still considered the largest inland sulfur deposit in the world; by 1993 its total production had surpassed all other dome mines. With the Spindletop oilfield discovery in 1901, Texas drillers exploring along the Gulf Coast punctured numerous salt domes. At Big Hill, five miles from Matagorda, they found little oil, but a definite presence of sulfur. In 1908 two St. Louis businessmen, A. C. Einstein and J. W. Harrison, bought the mineral rights at Big Hill, drilled for sulfur, and found a good show. On December 23, 1909, they formed the Gulf Sulphur Company, with headquarters in Matagorda. The sulfur industry was in its infancy. In October 1891 Dr. Herman Frasch obtained a patent to use superheated water to melt sulfur cryhttp://www.uer....readid=106759stals and pump the liquid to the surface and into vats, where it solidified into elemental sulfur."

Check out these pics from mid 2008.. quite a bit has been removed, sadly.

Pretty interesting picture. The boat/trailer and dump truck were all still there in the same spot when we visited.

Good and proper job, Oscaryu1.

Somebody's got to climb those stacks--sooner or later.

There was actually a rappelling line down both of them (or what looked like one). It's incredibly high up in the air, and the "ladder" was just some rebar sunk into some mortar. Roughly a fourth of them were already loose in the smokestack.. it was tempting though! Would definitely have done it had I had another way down haha.

backslider26, how far away was the airport?

The gas plant guys next door to the old sulfur plant use the parking lot and other areas as storage for their old vehicles, cattle trailers, and tools. If you're out there on a weekday, be careful.

DSLR != better pics.

Composition, subject matter, balance, all still play a role.

Nice explore still

The Phillips 66 or some other guys? There were quite a few ATV's and trucks roaming about when we were exploring.. it appears that the plant land was divided up and sold off in small lots..

New erm, CGI'd pics of the main/quality control/chem buildings:

Beautiful things. Everything was a bit moist and a little corroded, but the dials still turned and everything.

Telephone server, apparently.

creepy.

floors rotted through

legit backup tapes lol.

dat doorstop

This was in one of the walk in vaults.. we didn't touch it; looks like somebody was here before us.
