Watermarking

So I have seen a few people who watermark their exploring pics. Do you think this is a good idea? The only problem I could think of is if you put your real name on them then people will know who you are and can link you to where ever you were.

As could your username . Watermarks are just so people don't use your pictures as theirs, not as a tracking device.

I know a few people who have had their images stolen and used on another site or had people post them as their own. That's why I use watermarks. People will do stupid things for full membership or to get information from others.

I look at it this way. It takes a minute to shop out a watermark. If you can do any basic editing, you can steal a photo.

So I don't watermark. I also make no money from my shooting, it's mostly my own enjoyment. I'm sure my photos have been secretly stolen. I try not to think about it, even though someday I want to be important with this.

For me in my head, the best a watermark would do is generate attention to my name if someone simply linked to it.

I've shopped out entire doors, vehicles, trees, etc. It's very simple. Any watermark can be removed flawlessly by your average nincompoop.

Watermarks are to make people with bad pictures feel like they have good pictures. convincing themselves that someone would want to steal their photos.

This is a really witty signature..

+5

Cannot stress this enough. No one wants to steal your bad HDR photos. Adding a watermark isn't going to hide how bad your composition is, whether you think thats what you're doing or not.

I am DO make money from my photography and have had my images stolen more than once. Typically the best way to deal with it is to publicly oust the thief, rather than waste time putting some crap over your photos "just in case".

I usually put on a watermark, albeit a very obstructive and small one.

All photos should have massive, overbearing frames that get in the way of the photo. Check out these beauties:

Number 1 is breathtaking. Only thing I would change about it is adding some HDR, only slightly to emphasize the vibrant colors that much more..

I hate them, but some of my photographs do get taken and used on lots of different web sites, so on those kinds of shots, I have started putting a logo that shows my photog site address, just to let people know where to find more of the same.

I resisted it for a long time, but shots of crazy, half naked ladies sometimes need special treatment.

You mean you picture your watermarks right? That way no one can steal them?

I do this:

Anyone who would crop it off doesn't give a shit anyway, and otherwise it doesn't ruin the shot and allows people to find their way back to the source if they like it.
