Frankie's Cave Story

Hey Everyone, TwinCitiesTunnelRat here with my first post.
I'd like to start off with a story about this guy I know "Scotty" and his experience in Frankie's Cave way back in the 80's.
He told me about how he and his friends would go down to the Caves to play "Ditch". If you guys and gals don't know what ditch is then you missed out as a kid. It's a game usually played at night where there are groups of 2 or so and one group has to watch the base and at the same time look for the other people who are trying to get back to the base without being tagged.
So, back to the story. Scotty went down with about ten of his friends to this cave here in the Twin Cities and they were getting the teams together and nobody picked Scotty to be on their team. The only other person left without a teammate was this blind kid, I don't remember what Scotty said his name was but I remember Scotty telling me that he was like " Oh man, why did I get stuck with the blind kid, we are gonna lose for sure"
Little did he know that the blind kid knew the whole cave system by heart, being how he was blind he never needed a flashlight to find his way he had memorized every nook and cranny throughout the cave. The blind kid told Scotty to just shut off his flashlight because they didn't need it since he knew the place by heart. Sure enough, they ended up winning easily because they were able to sneak around in complete darkness to avoid being tagged.

I have been mapping out this cave system for a few days now and it has really made me appreciate a cartography class that I took back in High School. Mystery Rock??

P.S My dog loves the caves.

You know that map is a real bad idea being posted for all to see. The local PD has known about this website for years and does monitor it. They have come to meet us before, but running on explorer time, they beat us there by at least 2 hours on several occasions. I don't know if you noticed how much fill the city used to seal it, or how long it took to get back in. But when they decide to do it again it will be a better job. And cool dog, I bet him and Mr. Brown would get along great.

There are no entrance pics only a pic of a mysterious rock, and a cave beast.

You are a tough area, with a tight knit group. Patience hombre. Play the game and good things will happen.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Get rid of that picture! The markings on the cave make it easy to figure out where you are. God, you must hate everyone and the hobby to keep ruining every place! herp derp

No, you're welcome to post photos that are discrete. The ones of your dog are fine. Who doesn't love exploring dogs? Most people have learned that it's typically better to just not post any photos at all, but if the photos don't show anything sensitive, there's nothing wrong with that.

What isn't fine is posting entry photos. That's not an unspoken rule. 5 asked you to remove it, ans you responded saying it wasn't an entrance, it was a "mysterious rock." You'll notice that your post was edited by a moderator. That's because posting entry photos is against the TOS.

I for sure don't feel welcome here. It's like everything i do is breaking some unspoken commandments.

I'm sorry you don't feel welcome. It does seem like you have been fairly responsible overall (unlike a lot of other new people). I don't think anyone is personally mad at you-- we just wanted you to get rid of the map and entrance photo. New people make mistakes, and that's to be expected. The rules are written, but not always in the most clear form or in the most obvious places. Check out this writeup on responsible exploring by Shotgun Mario, hopefully it will explain things pretty well to you: http://www.scribd....oundation-Concepts.

I'm not up in the Twin Cities right now, but if I were I would be happy to meet up, do a drain or cave, and have a chat about exploring, the internet and the community. I'm sure someone will want to meet up with you soon. Just keep exploring, but be careful about information that you share, particularly online. Keep what Mario's writeup says in mind and you'll be just fine.

What it comes down to is MSP is rough on new members. Even moreso when said new members can't instantly intuit the specifics of MSP's exploring culture.

We're protective of our locations, a lot more so than a lot of other areas seem to be. Collectively, we don't care for anything that appears to threaten favorite spots, such as making detailed photo-threads in public places, including FaceButt and Flikr.

So new guys get hazed. Some get trolled pretty hard-core. They learn or they give up and disappear from UER. (And if you become familiar with the local characters (two-thirds of whom are duplicate accounts being run by Max Action), you'll notice that most of us don't really post here, either. Though obviously more of us lurk than will openly admit it. )

If the new guy keeps exploring, eventually he or she bumps into someone in a hole, meets a few people, and discovers that we're actually pretty chill, for the most part, in person. The internet is just a horrible place, is all.

Your post wasn't really so bad. You took some heat for the mysterious rock photo (which is COMPLETELY not a face, by the way, it's just weird shadows on an odd Martian outcrop, ffs!). Your biggest "mistake" is joining right at a time when there was a lot of FAR less discrete posting going on. (And honestly, even that guy will probably eventually learn that we're decent people when we're not acting like slobbering trolls.)

So: Welcome to the outskirts of the MSP exploring community. It's worth sticking around for, even if you've taken some heat.

I'm a "Leave only footprints, take only pornography" kind of guy, myself.

For a second, I thought this was going to be the start of a synopsis for a bad horror movie. But then pictures of puppy so it's okay.
