I'm done with it, I've made my point and I've explored other peoples ideas. I've come out of it with an understanding of why the interviews were done and I hope I've convinced some people to assess the risks before proceeding.

I don't believe interviews are all bad. I do like the way some things were handled, and I don't like the way other aspects were handled.

Still friends?

I am definitely done.

do you realize how many places could have been infiltrated in the time we all argued about this....

I say that kitten is ruining UE for everyone! If the media sees how cute that kitten is, they'll be all over this forum, and within minutes all sorts of innocent children will be dead and we will all be in prison!

Of course, I might be overreacting.

You are missing the point. The kitten has rights too! What happens when PETA gets a hold of this!

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics. PETA furious at shaving of cat for medical reasons. Rest of world thinks it funny and cute in a sad "poor kitty" kind of way.

*why the hell isn't this working? this is funny, dammit*

Has anyone realized the REAL issue here. Look deep into that kittens eyes. The kitten holds the secret to the lower Queen station. He follows the rats through places that a human can only dream of.

Cats are the ultimate infiltrating machine. They are our friends as their curiosity takes them into corners and dark places. They only travel by night. They run at the sight of a human.

or.....maybe infiltrators are cats! MEOOWWWWWWW "^"

Or, infiltrators could be like my cat.

Fat orange balls of fur who make strange noises and like thier bellies rubbed.

Suprisingly, nobody in UEA even mentioned ot me that a forum repeatedly calling me an idiot existed on Infiltration (via the UER messageboard-network-thing).

I'm an idiot for using my real name, eh? Well, I don't know how it works in the East, but here the cops don't give a crap if you are in drains. We consider it incredibly-low-risk exploring (legally). If we were "caught" draining, and the officer was having a bad day, they might be able to give us some sort of city bylaw ticket, but there's certainly nothing illegal there.

I was asked by the reporter if she could use my real name in the article - I said no. She said that it would only be used to talk about draining, which, for all intents and purposes, is all Matthew Beaton does. I said Yes.

The "drain police" have not arrested me. I have had absolutely no contact from authorities, because draining is not an issue.

Now, on the issue of whether or not I should've agreed to the article? I think it's a good idea. It has done wonders for the Cave Clan in Australia to have positive media coverage. This wasn't the greatest article, but it wasn't terrible either. I think it turned out a bit better than "Bill from Edmonton"'s CTV report.

I didn't agree to it for "15 minutes of fame" or any crap like that. Hell, I didn't even care if they mentioned my name - I was suprised that they opened the article with it. I did hope that they'd publish the website, though - so that others who are truly interested in exploring can learn about it.

And by "truly interested", I mean those who are willing to do the work to find their own drains and explore them. We don't post locations on our site - and we are very, very firm about that. We do not want every average pre-teen as someone said here to be going and tagging or paintballing or raving or whatever the hell it is they do to these places.

We stand for what I believe most UE'ers stand for - preservation of sites.. "take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints" - the UE mantra. And how does that article allow the average joes to explore things easier? It doesn't. It might get them interested - and if we give them the website, we can put a good spin on it, show them why to preserve instead of destroy, etc. If they go at it on their own, uneducated (via the media or otherwise) - then they might cause problems for the rest of us.

Sorry if that was a big rant, but I was being made out to be some kind of moron here. I think my opinion is appreciated.

Glad to finally hear from you, it's about time you defended your actions. The flame war has continued into other posts, I no longer feel the need to fuel the fire... to sum it up

Media attention has positive and negative consequences. Hopefully we've all learned to take reporters in stride, they are not to be trusted completely. Anyway, I'm sorry that I got into name-calling, it was immature and unjustified and didn't prove a point.
