Doran Mill Located in Shelby, Nc

Here is a few a shots taken with a Cannon 35mm of a local mill in my area. The Mill was been abandoned since 2001 and there has been recent talk about a major part of the main building and the several offices surrounding the property being demolished for a data center (which will cost 10 million dollars and employ ten people) to be built in its place. Currently the building sits vacant, occasionally used by local law enforcement for search and rescue, drug dog training, and bomb training. It has been heavily vandalized and is rapidly falling apart. The main building seen in the pictures has two main levels separated into two sections, one of which has a basement area. There is roof access on both sections and a water tower located on the rear of the building. Each floor has extremely large open floors with offices, break rooms, labs, and restrooms along the outer walls. Anyways, this is my first post on this site, I hope you guys enjoy and sorry in advance for some the quality issues in the pictures, upon arrival to the mill I realized my digital cameras battery was dead and went to the back up 35mm with a dirty shutter...1.

Nice location, but are your hands kind of ingrown at a 45 degree angle or something?

lol Most of the pics were taken by a friend of mine who apparently tried to get that "I'm an artsy photographer" look. I plan on going back before the building is demolished for some better shots soon, since its located only about thirty minutes from me.

Good photographers actually look at what is in the shot for good composition. They don't just hold the camera over their head and various strange angles and click the button.

Tell your friend that Therrin says he/she is an idiot, and that noone thought his/her pics were "artsy" at all.

Good. IMO trying to take good, interesting photos of boring subjects is great practice because if you can make an interesting photograph of boring shit, imagine what you can do with interesting shit.

Let me know if you want to go, I pretty much know all the ins and outs of the place. We actually have the keys to the surrounding office buildings that were part of Doran. A friend of mine talked to the mayor of Shelby a few years back and convinced him to give the keys to us for a "class project " of course we made copies before returning them. It would take several hours to see everything in the place. The shaft seen in photo 15 runs from the roof all the way to the basement with access on each floor, at the bottom it opens into a small room with a huge pile of papers with employee information and tax information from the company, which I find to be interesting because there is social security numbers and everything on them. So much for privacy I suppose. As far as police or anything, the only problem we had was going during the day once and the church across the street calling the pd, but we were already leaving by the time they arrived, got pulled and the car searched to make sure we didn't steal anything. The police are too busy chasing meth addicts to worry about a few people taking pictures lol.
