Smoking and UE?

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd start a discussion about the effects of smoking either while UE-ing, or how it might affect anything similar.

I've heard that the combination of tobacco and asbestos is not a good one, is this fact? or rumor, I've bought a respirator anyways, but it doesn't hurt to know.

Also what do you guys think about smoking in abandonments? is it taboo? completely fine? etc...

Obviously I'm not talking about active infiltration here, Nobody in their right mind would smoke inside a still-operational building, but about old farms, warehouses, cranes and whatnot...

Recently trying to quit as it is a horrible habit, the e-cig is really helping, but as most anyone knows it's pretty hard

Don't smoke kids!

When (part of) the place burns down hours after you left, you'll wait and wonder, fearing that knock at the door. "Did I make sure that was fully extinguished?"

You'll sweat and worry until the building's caretaker is arrested for accidentally starting the fire with a torch while secretly scrapping the place.

Yeah I could see that happening, and if there is asbestos around its best just to keep your respirator on in the first place. When ever I smoke UEing I just smoke one in my truck and head in after.

Fact. Tar can ball around it and keep it in your lungs longer than the particulates would otherwise get out with coughing/respiration/mucus/so on.

But really, the bigger danger as has been mentioned is a still smoldering butt catching something.

Also, the smell of a cigarette in a building is incredibly strong, so if you're worried about other people being in the building (workers, security, homeless, whomever you may have reason to worry about) it's a pretty dead giveaway to the fact at least *someone* was in there, and it does tend to linger for a bit unless you're in open space. I've actually had the heads up on scrappers in places before I stumbled into them because they were smoking.

Just food for thought when considering the if/should I/if so where for smoking.

Yeah, not a good idea, especially in active underground systems. Being 40 feet from pissed off sounding Belgian transit workers while in my sleeping bag wasn't so fun. Had it been cigarettes maybe they wouldn't have cared as much.

Oh, and that be said, more seasoned drainers (and mine sorts) will have to chime in, but with gases and whatnot, I hear smoking underground is also often a no-no.

I smoke the electronic cigarette. It leaves my tastebuds intact to taste the delicious asbestos in the air.

Yeah drains would be a bad idea to smoke in even more so if they are used for human waste, methane and fire most of the time are a bad combo.

Never been a problem for me. i just make sure it's out before moving on. concrete and dirt and metal isnt flammable anyways. and i dont usually smoke in tunnels or drains out of courtesy for my non smoking urbex friends. because there isnt much fresh air flowing about. unless you're in a sewer with gases and whatnot. it souldnt be a problem either. train tunnels and drains with water dont usually catch fire either.

Ill smoke almost anything in a quiet abandonment, but in a high profile place I would usually just wait for one of those "best cigarette I ever smoked" times while driving away from the place after a safe exit. As for the whole tabacco and asbestos combo, I have smoked cigarettes in tunnels where the particles look like a massive snowstorm in front the flashlight beam. Hope I didn't screw myself too bad, as I have quit smoking after 4 years. Its hard but if you think of it as you just craving the nicotine, which it usually is, the e-cig is a pretty good way to get off of it.

Straight up!

As for smoking and UE, I don't typically smoke anything while out. In So Cal, I enjoyed a nice session of non-tobacco items before heading out. Or a nice edible item. But that was mainly to keep my bastard back in check. If I wanted a cigarette, I'd wait until afterwards or when I arrived back home.

What I've enjoyed lately is my e-cigarette. I get the disposable ones from "Fin", so if I lose it or destroy it, I'm not out a lot of money. No flame, no smell and some what better for your health. Just after draining, even if it doesn't get wet, I swear it tastes like storm drain water.

I noticed a lot of you talking about the e-cigarette. Do you really find that it helps you. I have been wary of spending that much money on something that is a fluke.

Is it not illegal to smoke in abandonments and drains? I'd be surprised if it weren't, considering how the laws are toughening on smoking these days.

Never done tobacco, but there's often a joint or two involved if it's a location I've been before or is otherwise low risk.
