abandoned fall out shelter?

Hi guys!! I'm new here and to UE, but I've got something big planned.

Some friends and I did lots of research and found a "urban legend" that turned out to be true. A 60+ year old abandoned bomb shelter. A lot of people know of it, but, no one knows where its at. On record, there's only one other person , besides the owners, architect etc.who know where its at. Its been shut down since the late 90's. Vents, dehumidifiers, plumbing, everything.

I'm looking for people who may have been on similar explorations. Since I'm not really sure what the conditions we might run into, what should we bring for supplies? Any and all advice is appreciated!!

Can't say I've done a bomb shelter, but I have found one or two 'urban legends' that turned out to be true, its always really exciting. I'd try to find out as much concrete info about the place as you can and go from there (which'll be hard since there are probably lots of rumors about it)... but that goes for pretty much everything.

I was in a couple of them, but they were all this used by some armed forces.
But I saw on TV that you really should protect yourself as some of them tend to have mold, asbestos and all kind of nasty things in them.

If you can, open the door and let the old air get out for like a half day or so before you try it.

Besides this have fun.

go in a small group, tell someone you trust on the outside where you will be going (or leave a note), maybe plan on setting a check in time with that same person through cell phone, so that they know you've made it in and out and that you are okay. bring flashlights, small amount of food and water and stock up on common sense. watch your footing.

Are you exploring a bomb shelter or mount Everest?

The air quality on both locations might be the same.

I'm giving advice to someone who requested it, and yes those are SOME of the precautions that I take, the bomb shelter could be fairly large or small. I don't know. I have not been to the one that is being spoken of. But if it is large, then it could lead into other things...and I always bring snacks no matter what.

As I said, I was in a couple of them, and yes you gave a good advice.
A bunker can have bad air as every mine shaft, the problem is, that there is only one entrance and that the air will not circulate without a air pump.

It can be filled with water that brings you molt.

All the stuff that could be in it can be dangerous.

So yes go on a group, even better let one person tied to a rope go in front.

In Russia some people died when going in a quite large one and never made it out in time.

Are you talking about somekinda underground military command center or something?

Most civilian "Fallout Shelters" are not nearly as elaborate nor as well sealed/secured as your post implies.

Back in the old "Civil Defense" days, many office buildings and such had the basement designated as a "Fallout Shelter". It was usually nothing more than a strong structure with some rudimentary supplies such as drums of drinking water and blankets. Really just one step above "duck and cover".

At the time this one was built, it was the largest privately funded underground shelter. Its roughly 5,000 sq feet. Made to house 100 people for at least 6 months. We have a hand drawn map that a Guy made when he went in. We also found a copy of the original floor plan/blue print.

Its under 10 ft of Earth and 6 ft of durastress concrete. We did hear it has mold so I figured we'd need gas masks. As for air flow, it makes sense. There is one way in, a 2,000 lb blast proof steel door. And one way out... to dig ourselves out. The main entrance is open, so there may be some good air, but it wont reach all through the shelter. Its kind of worrisome since the door is on hydraulics, which are probably no good anymore. Once the door seals, it wont reopen. My worry is it will close while we're in. I know UE involves a lot of risk taking though.

Supposedly, there are still clothes from the 50's hanging in some of the closets. Beds and cots. Some food and medical supplies. We've seen some pictures of the masivr diesel engines in the power room as well.

You need a respirator not a gas mask.

Make it so the door CAN'T close! is it really worth dying to see a musty, moldy mostly empty bunker?

I do what some would consider risky, dangerous things - but it's always 'controllable' risks mostly meaning I am the failure point - I'll make it through as long as I don't screw up.

And as is always good procedure - make sure at least one person who is not going with you knows exactly where you're going and what time to expect you to give them an "everything's good, we're out safe" phone call.

if the door hasn't closed in over a decade its safe to assume its not going to close for the few hours your in there.

True, I read it as the door was operable from the outside but potentially not from the inside. - When in doubt, make damn sure you can get out before you go in!

I found some abandoned bomb shelters in the Central Coast area of California. They weren't exactly hidden, but they were out of the way. It takes a few miles of bike riding or walking to get there without parking somewhere awkward. Anyway, the air was really unpleasant in them. Some worse than others, of course, but none were pleasant. There were something like 15 to 20 of them and there were hundreds of doves in a few of them. There were gardening supplies, old lighting fixtures, some empty food cans presumably from homeless, but nothing all too exciting. All the doors were in a state where they could not be opened any further or closed, due to so much earth built up around the entrances. Because these were all separate bunkers as opposed to an underground network, I didn't really need any supplies, but something to clean up the air I was breathing would have been welcome if I was to stay in there long. These were right next to a cliff leading to a beach. It was absolutely gorgeous. Anyone know the spot I'm talking about?

Well, I can't say I ever had the luck of finding a bomb shelter, but I once found an abandoned NATO base near where I live. Needles to say I was thrilled. I did some research, and it turned out the thing had been handed over to the municipality not long before. I went there within a month, all hyped up and ready to do some serious exploring. However, I found out a few things on the location itself:
1. Apart from the (fake?) camera, an alarm system had been installed which seemed legit enough after some research on the brand.
2. Apparently you can hire a guide to get a tour.
Based on this, I can only recommend you to watch out for alarm systems when you go there, but even more importantly would be the research. The fact that you can take a tour through an abandoned bunker may seem disappointing (it did to me), but it beats having to force yourself a way through welded doors and such.
TL;DR: Make sure you do proper research on the location, it might already be publicly accessible (with or without guide). Try to get a background on possible alarm systems when you encounter them. If it seems legit, find another entrance or forget it.
