Night shots?

I can barely seem to take them but don't feel like writing if off entirely. Rooftopping is one thing, you can focus pretty easily on surrounding buildings. But my Nikkon D3000 pretty much can't focus if you're more than five feet from something after sundown. As a result I have to manual focus with no image preview.

Aside from any advice on my focus/inability to tell when I'm focused issue, what else needs work here?

1. The unnatural coloring is from the street lights. Unique, or crappy?

2. The square on the right is a glare, this is through a window

3. Yes, I know it's horrifically blurry

I like the lighting in #2, the other two aren't doing anything for me. I know your pain brother...I have a wimpy Rebel XS and I have to go into manual focus in extreme darkness as well.

I more or less only shoot manual focus. That way Its my fault if the image isnt right.

Night shots often require a bit of tweaking the color balance in my opinion to get things looking more natural.

If its not a critically sensitive area where you are trying to keep out of view or find some place hidden. Use your torch to assist the auto focus find its point i usually do this from about 5-8 ft away. Then switch to manual focus should stay that way unless you accidentally brush the focus collar, Or switch to manual and put it to infinity. There may also be different types of focus settings in your camera read the manual to find out if there is. practice and more practice. sadly there is not much you can do about reflections in the window glass apart from getting the lens as close as possible. I do a lot of long exposers in bulb mode. but you need to really check the manual for the camera and just practice with time you will get to now what works for your camera set up.

Pet stores usually have cheap keychain-size laser pointers that work really well for manually focusing on stuff at night. It's a small dot that's easy to pull focus on, and it's a lot stealthier than using a flashlight.

These shots all look like they would be focused to infinity so not being able to autofocus isn't really an issue. The color casts are pretty bad. If you aren't shooting RAW you should be, being able to go back and fix the white balance in post is key. Also, avoid angles like you used in number 3, that shit is lame.

Regardless of the strange color cast, the first photo is awesome. Besides the focus issue. But, it's a Photo I'd like to have tried to get if I was there. The reflection is great.

The laser idea is perfect, thanks to the fullest extent for the idea. I have one already, I just need new batteries.

Focusing to infinity...what exactly does that mean? I may have gained some mommentum with alot of areas of photography but I'm still a noob and I'm clueless when I branch out of my comfort zones.

I'm also exclusively shooting in RAW and every shot I ever take [without people in it] is an HDR for which I have to do manual bracketing [no AEB]. Even these.

That said, what is white balance? Maybe it's a dumb question after over a year of shooting, maybe it's not--I'm so clueless to the subject that I don't even know that. Once defined, how do I properly manipulate white balance?

Says you...I've recently become much more found of dutch angles after a year of shooting straight hallways. I've also shot that same hallway straight before at day and night.

Edit: Oh yeah, and how do I use the bulb setting? I don't even know what it is...I've tried and it just shoots a fragment of a second.

You need a remote release or you have to hold the button down manually which usually results in motion blur because you end up moving the camera. The best thing is to get a remote that has a locking button so you can hold the shutter open for any period of time that you choose.

White balance. Just google search. The right white balance keeps you colors true in different lighting situations. Different lighting has different color temperatures that effects true white.

I highly recommend the Yongnuo RF-602 - they kick a whole lot of ass.

They can be used as a wireless shutter release, or a wireless flash trigger. It's like killing two birds with one stone. Plus, they're dirt cheap, reliable and I've never had a single misfire or problem using them.

This^^^^ I have something similar and although it's cheap it's been worth its weight in gold. They allow you to trigger the camera and then leave it alone to light paint or do whatever. The best part is once you get it mounted you don't have to physically touch the camera to trigger the shutter so if you have a good tripod you won't have motion blur at all.

Edit: you can also get a wired remote for super cheap. Its not as good as the wireless one in that its still hooked to the camera. You can shake the camera if its windy or you pull on the cord too much while making the exposure, but its still a lot better that trying to push the shutter button without causing motion blur.

White balance basically is what tells the camera how to adjust the colors. When you see a pic that the colors look "off" (red looks orange for example), it means the camera miscalculated what red should look like in said pic. Rather than seeing white as white, it sees it as off white and as a result throws all other colors off. Adjusting WB is done differently depending on the post production software you use. If you google "adjusting white balance for (insert software name)" you will get results on how to do this. You will be amazed at how the color changes depending on how it is set. As already stated, using RAW allows for easily changing WB settings.

Hope this helps.

I use a Kodak EasyShare point-and-shoot, and usually with issues in the auto-focus I use a flashlight/laserpointer (whatever I have handy).

As far as the posted photos, I like your compositions in #1 and #2. I feel like number 3 has a weaker composition regardless of aforementioned blurriness. I understand what you were trying for, and it's a cool idea, but it seems a little unbalanced to me.

Also, did you edit #1? The lighting seems a smidge wonky even for sodium lights.

#2 would be wonderful if not for the glare. It still has excellent use of light and great composition.

Thanks, I guess it's important that the base of these photos [composition, concept] is where it should be. I can work on tweaks like lighting or balance from there. I did edit all of these, they're actually HDRs...but had no idea how to fix the white balance so I just decided to work with the bizarre colors and make them 'artsy' [which in this case was a cop-out term for unsatisfied with the results!]

How do you fix white balance in RAW images? What's the option?
