It sounds like you have a lot to learn, more than anyone on here is going to be able to help you with. White balance, hyperfocal distance, and how to shoot bulb are all things that would be explained in any book regarding basic digital photography, go pick one up and get reading.

I'm now extremely passionate about doing it right and in the past several months have really started to make progress. I might actually go out and...ya know, research? This is uncommon for me, based on my preferred method of learning I'm more about getting advice from people and applying it in the field than taking the time to be patient and read. It probably sounds stupid, but I don't learn so well from reading. I'm primarily a visual, conversational, and applied learner. Anyhow, I do feel I've been making some major changes. Here's an example of my first shot to one of my favorites of the most recent trip. I think I'm going somewhere but have a hell of a way to go.
