Concerning the LocationDB star, if a user did not create the gallery, but DID upload enjoyable pix (and the ratings demonstrate that fact), who gets credit towards the star; the creating user, or the user posting the photos?

Didn't we have something to that affect? When i posted up 5 locations, i saw something like that here awhile back. It may have been something else, but i thought we had a star based on how many locations on posted.

There's no award for going to a place someone else found and taking pictures. The loc DB star is awarded to people who have found new places and have posted them.

No problem. In my particular circumstance, the person who found the location did not have any pix to post, they all originated from me. But that's the answer I was looking for.

I made a suggestion about this in the past, there are some location DB locations that were created by someone, but they never put down any pictures. Then somebody else did and I really wanted to show my aprreciation for them but if I rate it high, the guy who did no work at all gets the credit.

I had a whole plan drawn up for it but Av didn't like it.

I didn't know about how this worked, till I read this thread. Now I have a question: I am unlikely to explore alone, unless I'm really confident about a site, so for example; the Oakville Hydro Building / Adult Learning Center, which Boffo and I explored - I don't have a camera so he took the pix. So, I did the location write-up, and he posted his gallery... I saw this as simple division of labour, but instead it seems to mean that I'm stealing his credit.

Is there no way to indicate who the other location discoverers are, that all who documented a site for the first time, may receive credit for their efforts?

There's no "credit" that is received.

Feel free to put into "information" or something "discovered by xxx and yyy"...

I don't really care about getting a "star" either way, but someone could just read about a location, gather info through internet resources, post it and some lame pics, and voiala! A location! Meanwhile, someone halfway across the country has actually been to the site, posts great pics as well as nice descriptions, and you're saying no credit should be awarded? Like I said I really don't care, but most of the locations here aren't "discovered" they are simply locations someone took the trouble to post.
The Buffalo Central Terminal is an example. No offense the original poster, but her didn't exactly "discover" the place. And all it would take was internet info and there is a location to his credit. The pictures are the Gravy here! It allows others to comment, exchange ideas, bullshit, e.t.c..
I could sit in my barcalounger and post about 480 places that aren't on the LDB, but does that mean that I get credit for posting it? No the real joy is in looking at everyones photos, as most of these places are well known anyway.
You just want to see someone elses take on what you have or haven't seen.
Now if it's something noone has seen or knows about, fine, like the Florida door, I've got no prob with that, but the BCT, comeon, this is a place everyone and their brother has been to.
It's not like the LDB is a roadmap to "unknown locations". It's a forum of its own in a sense.
My new location will be "my infiltration of NORAD" I'm sure I can score some pics from the US DOD. How about the East wing of the White house?
Get real , these places are common knowlege, most of it's just getting to see the images.

I thought about this awhile.

I know what you mean, Av, but as usual, your approach is initially rigid and inflexible. What good is the Location DB if not for pictures of the place? No one is gonna use it much if they see only a write-up of some place with no pix at all.

Now, if the person discovering and creating the location has no pix, fair enough, It's still a find. No rocks thrown.

But... someone coming behind who posts some pix, with text and all, ought to get some credit for it. Their efforts round out and complete the gallery.

I'm not advocating posting pix when some are present already, and getting "credit" for that. I'm suggesting you adjust the system to accomodate a 2nd person adding photos when the gallery creator had none to offer; the 2nd person then receiving some type of credit for the effort.

Actually, isn't the purpose of the DB to give someone an introduction to the place using a few photos and then you can link to your own photos hosted elsewhere on your own site/money/time/bandwith?

I would be less interested in visiting a site if the LocDB showed the ENTIRE place already; then what is there to see? What does it do other than take up space and bandwith? Not very much...

I disagree with your opinion on giving extra credits for photos taken at a site, and I agree with how it is now.

I judge people on what they say in the fora and what pictures and locations they made. Not by their stars.

Yes, I think that's the general idea.

Whether it showed the whole place or not is arguable. My pictures, few or many, might not satisfy your view of thoroughness at all.

I disagree with your opinion on giving extra credits for photos taken at a site, and I agree with how it is now.
Fine. But a location sans pictures is hardly worth the bandwidth, because the purpose, after all, is to show pictures with text. And if I came after you and added pictures, where you had none to begin with, I think that should count toward something.

If you post a small album and link to your own website with more photos, you get credit for posting the photos, more visitors to your website (and probably more credibility and recognition for yourself from that), and you also use up less resources that other people are paying for.

Plus, Avatar-X already mentioned that if someone obviously put quite a bit more effort into an entry than the creator, he would consider changing the owner if specifically requested to consider it...

Anyways, seems the best idea to me
