Indeed.

Just laid down the hammer, re: DS. 20 minutes PER DAY. He can divide that time any which way he likes, but when the bell rings at 20 minutes, DS is gone until tomorrow.

This is day one. We'll see what the dinner hour conversation is like. I'm guessing his mother is going to have something to say about MY new edict, but she only gets 5 minutes to speak each day, and she can divide that 5 minutes any which way she likes. After that, it's straight to the garage until tomorrow.

I'll give them 1/2 an hour, after that it's back into the stockade. The older one isn't as bad, yeah he is mesmerized, but at least he knows what he is trying to accomplish w/the the thing. The little one just whines about her brother not getting her to "world five."

Know why McGiver can deactivate a nuclear device with a paper clip, build a robot out of an old carburetor, jump-start an 18-wheeler with a shoelace, fix a delta-wing in mid-air with a stick of Wrigley's, reprogram a NASA satellite with digital wristwatch, save humanity with a smile...?

He didn't wasted his childhood with DS.

Was a time when my parents sent me outside to play with a piece of string, a block of wood, and a rusty nail, and I could be happy FOR HOURS.

Last night my oldest, Nikita, kept me up all night with his complaints. Oh the ruckus he made. First he wants out, then he wants to cuddle, then he gets into a screaming fight with my youngest. Oh, I tell you, kids these days.

Actually, some friends of mine did just that over Christmas - bought their daughter a DS, but threw it out when she behaved inexcusably.

My cats love my DSi.

But they get mad when I have to take it away because it's bedtime or dinnertime or bathtime.

Final Fantasy: Echoes of Time is their favorite.

But they're 6 and 7. (Multiply that by like 8 or 9 and you get middle aged adults)

But seriously...I didn't get any of the really cool electronic toys until I was well into my 20's-30's, because I had to buy them myself. Parents certainly weren't gonna blow a couple grand on a pc or 3 or 400 bucks on an MP3 player. Not when we needed food and to pay the bills.

I threaten to sell my kids' stuff on eBay. And I'm just psycho enough to do it.

But before school, there's no TV or video games. Get dressed, eat breakfast, get your stuff together, and that's it. No distractions. When you get home, homework and chores first, then entertainment. If they don't like it, then the entertainment gets taken away. I threatened to delete my youngest's saved games on the PS2, and he actually started crying. I think I found my secret weapon.

They actually responded well to my insanely screaming at them--they played outside after school, did their homework (well, the one that has homework did), and then read until they fell asleep. I guess you gotta lose it once in a while to remind them who's boss. But, really I hate the hierarchical approach to parenting, maybe I would rather remind them that we need to work together to make the entire family move forward? If that means putting away the DS for a while, so be it, but it also means feeding them supper and not openly viewing porn when they are hungry. Let them eat porn?

I'm proud of mine so far. She is 11, loves basketball. Can already drive a manual transmission. Is proficient with a long arm and getting better with a pistol. And likes to explore abandonments too! So far, I haven't completely screwed up lol.
