When I was in Boston a few years back, I noticed a symbiotic relationship between UE and hacking ("hack" in the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_hack sense of the word, not computer infiltration). I know this relationship is not exclusive to Boston either since there are numerous media reports of hacks like the VW bugs hanging from the Golden Gate, etc.

My general impression of Victoria UE is that it is completely removed from hacking/pranking...unless I am just not privy to such exploits. Does anybody have any thoughts on this idea? Why is there not more hacking involved with urban exploration? Is it because the authorities are less supportive of that sort of public mischief (at MIT, MIT police and Boston police practically encourage you to hack)? Or, could it be that Victoria lacks the engineering prowess/reputation necessary to perpetuate these kinds of feats? (I'm not an engineer and I don't mean to offend any Victoria engineers in the least. I just mean that I don't think Victoria is "known" for its engineering schools like Boston is.)

Do you think that hacking being removed from UE is more mature, less mature, or just a completely different beast? I'm curious.

Regarding the hacking...I can't answer all you questions but I do know two things about Victoria...1) The police here have nothing to do. Seriously, other than round up mentally ill and/or homeless people, and the odd 'thug'...the only way they can pass the time is to pick on honest tax paying citizens. It's the price we pay for living in such a quite pleasant city. If you don't believe me try doing anything out of the ordinary...climb into the empty lot in Chinatown, climb up the Johnson Street Bridge, or check out a construction site or two and you will have so many 'officials' on you, the local Tim Hortons will seem empty...the bitterness is hard to hide...

And 2) Instead of 'hacking' the UVic engineers find an outlet for that type of energy by pushing a VW Bug around the Ring Road at UVic...I think schools like MIT and UBC do things like hang bugs off bridges each year, it just so happens UVic has found a different outlet.
