Asbestos Threat

I did some research on dnagerous enviromments, and found out some disturbing things about asbestos.

Asbestos is persistent. It is a pointed fibre that will affix itself to clothing and even your eyebrows. It is also very dangerous to your eyes.

The latency period is very long 10-20 years to see any negative effects.

For those of you who go into unknown environments occasionally, or an asbestos hazard rarely, a mask and safety goggles will likely do.

For those of us that spend extended amounts of time in a known asbestos envirinment the experts recommend a full face mask, and coveralls. The coveralls should be removed first, bagged, move away(upwind) and remove the mask. Soak the coveralls in the bag before taking them out to wash them.

Might be a bit of overkill, but for some of us it is a real issue. Dust masks just don't cut it.

Im very surprised that any UE did not do research about Asbestos before heading out. Granted this does not always prepare you, but still. before my very first mission I made sure i knew some of the risks. After all, isnt that what the Net is for? TV certainly doesnt have this info, does it? As it turns out, I failed to uncover all the risks as fellow member Merlin got to find out. Note from the posted pic his (thankfully) gloved hand next to the "aim NAB" sticker. Funny place to put a sticker, i thought at the time. Later in that building we noticed a hand written sign on the stairwell stating "Asbestos" so we went no further. And later, during more research, learned that "aim NAB" is actually an asbestos warning. A sticker slapped everywhere in a pipe's joint that asbestos is located to ensure that workers are properly cautious when dealing with it. If you look close at the pick you can see the asbestos dripping down the pipe towards Merlin. So glad i was taking the pics and not starring in them.

For more information, search the web before heading into dangerous areas. here's a head start:

Accoding to the workers compensation board, at Riverview Psyche, the film crews work around asbestos in the building and have been told, as long as they do not "disturb" the asbestos ( such as scraping or chipping it ), protective gear is not needed. Just being in it's presence in it's solid state, is not the danger, until you kick up the fibres. If you are going to be in an area with asbestos dust, then a proper Respirator is needed. Asbestos fibres are too small to be trapped by a standard filter mask and will offer you virtually no protection.

as far as the amount of exposure required, and onset of problems. Cases actually vary widely. Studies are finding that people have different levels of sensitivity and susceptability to exposure. there are cases of developing the cancer (mesothelioma) within a year of exposure. But generally it is a much longer time. Generally, death occurs within about 1 year after diagnosis. So take the precautions, it's worth it.

Yeah, I've heard it's alright unless you disturb the shit. It's harmful in airborn form.

I just use a half-face respirator most times.

I know where you can aqquire Candian Forces C5 Gas Masks (A full facial mask) if you are in the Vancouver area. I have one myself, it's good quality.

As far as I know, a gas-mask won't help you. A gas is just that, a gas... asbesto dust is actual physical particles of the fibre. You need a HEPA filter for asbestos. The one on my resperator is HEPA certified for asbestos, 99.9% of fibre will be trapped. Filters for a gas mask is designed for an entirely different thing.

I could be wrong, but that's what I always thought anyway

Alright, go here: http://www.asbestos-institute.ca/safemanual/manualimages/branch_6000.gif

This is what mine looks like, except instead of the round (soft) filters, I have smaller plastic-encased rectangular (hard) filters which were recommended to me.

If you're getting a respirator, be sure to use HEPA P-100 Class filters.

i was bored so i found some websites:
http://www.aboutmeso.com/mesothelioma_tobacco.html
http://www.math-science.sfasu.edu/pulmonary/internarticles/Lungcancer.html
http://www.asbestosrights.com/cigarettes.htm
basically if you smoke and if you have high exposure to asbestos you have a greater chance of getting cancer.
I came across all sorts of law suits, people that used to work in these old factories are now dieing because they didnt know about this back in the day...

Anyone who smokes should know they are going to die much sooner than non-smokers... each cigarette takes about 9 minutes off your life... there are over 4000 known toxins in standard cigarette smoke...

Basically: If you're stupid enough to smoke, you deserve to die of cancer.

Probably the easiest place to get the appropriate resperator is Home Depot. They have them there, approved for working around asbestos, for about $50.

Just remember, you do have to change the filters when they recommend, or you won't be protected properly...

The home depot crap is sufficient only if you are not going to be there a while.

There is a difference between encapsulated and not encapsulated asbestos. Floor tiles wires etc, are encapsulated. Helf demod bldg will have not encapsulated asbestos (whitby) and just walking through it will give you a potentially long term lethal dose.

But, hey you can argue about it till the cows come home. I get paid to teach people about this stuff.

The rule for IDLH environments is that if you do not know ther level of threat take the highest precaution.

The C-3 or C4 masks have excellent particulate filters, but are a bit of overkill and have a high level of respiration resistance.

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics.
