I absolutely love my XSI its been flawless since the day I bought it. I'm going to sell it for a 7D but that's only because I want faster AF tracking and Fps which is far from an issue with night time photos. I've been very happy with exposures in the 7-8 minute range from it. It would be hard to beat as a first DSLR for way under $900. Although for $900 you could pick up a T2i and have plenty of camera to grow into.

Or you could get an XSi with some additional lenses...50mm, 55-250mm, etc.

Save up another 2-300 and buy a 5D and some cheap lenses to get you started.

Hi,
Am I ready for a camera upgrade?
I've been thinking on buying a 50D or 7D, but I'm not sure if I'm ready yet. I've been using the 350D for about 4 years now, and these are some of the shots I took with it. (Both urbex and non urbex, just a few example shots which in my opinion are pretty good.)
So is a camera upgrade a good step for me? Or should I experiment more with composition? Or buy better lenses?
Next year I'll be travelling a lot, and it would be sweet to film also. Thats a + which comes with the upgrade. Also both of the above mentioned cameras use CF cards which I already have, and allow to use my lenses I currently have.
I've got a tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and a sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6
If the pictures arent good enough, please tell me honestly.  It will do more good then bad.

Your photos look good, but the two with the animals would have looked even better if you'd narrowed the aperture slightly, and brought more into focus. Of course, this is just a personal opinion. As for a camera upgrade, do YOU want one, or feel that you need it?

buy a better lens, 24-70L or 16-35.
Or two (17-40, 24-105L) then sell the rest of them and upgrade to fullframe.

Those lenses arent cheap. I was thinking on buying a 50mm first. Do those L series lenses work on my 350D? I though they didn't. That full frame bodys needed other lenses then the 1.6 frames or you'll get vigneting?

Yes I feel that I might buy it and feel ever so thankful that I did. I didnt want to buy the 5D because my lenses wouldnt work on it, so I would have to buy new ones.
I've got the CF cards, Ive got the lenses, and I think that a 5D might be a step too far too soon.The 7D however feels more like a natural step. I've got the movie mode, I ve got a better camera.
My budget is max 1500 euros cause I need to save up for my trip next year.

L lenses work fine on any Canon, crop or not. It's only the reverse (EF-S on FF) that doesn't work. You can't actually mount an EF-S on a full frame, but there are other crop lenses which will mount on a FF but will vignette in most cases.
The two lenses you have are fine. There are better of course, but you are already well past the point of diminishing returns. Unless you need something with a different focal length or a fast prime I wouldn't replace your lenses over replacing your camera.

hmm ok, now how about this: I found a second hands 5D with 28-70mm lens for 1500 euros. When I sell both my lenses for 250 each, I will have a used 5D with fullframe lens for 1000 euros.

I can't say if that is a good price or not, but you are going to lose a lot of wide range by going that route. You need something like the 16-35 on a full frame to replace your 10-20. Unless you've got the cash to upgrade both I'd keep the range if I was in your shoes.

or look for a 5d body and 17-40L and then pickup a nifty fifty 50mm f/1.8
you'd lose telephoto, but how often do you really use that?

I agree with both of you guys. I think I'll go for a 7D, and afterwards start upgrading with the lenses for full frames, and finally the full frame body. But that will probably after another 4 years or so.

If anyone is interested, I am selling my XSI right now on ebay, with a $700 EFS 18-200 Lens and all the nessesary junk. The lens is a beast, but it has been indispensible for the range needed, and not having to change lenses inside of a dusty moldy abandonment. I personally am upgrading to the 60d, because the biggest dif between that and the 7d is the FPS Rate because of the processor. I think I will save the 500 dollars for now, or at least till i can jump up again to the 5d MarkII.
On the 18-200, I used it last weekend in a Shriner's temple abandonment's auditorium, when we were upstairs in the catwalks, I was using 18-50 range, but I was also taking pictures of the ground below, and unaccessable areas, using it all the way out to 200.

As I said in another thread, I own a 7D, but if you shooting is mostly UE then get a 50D/60D and save more for better glass. The 7D is a beast, but most of it's features over the XXD line are not a huge benefit to UE photography.
Between the 50D/60D I'd say unless you want to take movies or shoot extreme ISO regularly then go for the 50D just because it's probably cheaper right now. The biggest advantage of the 60D is that's lighter. I wouldn't worry about the more plastic body, your XT survived 5 years, the 60D will too.

I'm in the same boat weddings and UE being the primary uses of my camera. Also some action stuff mostly motocross. That said I'm going with the 7D as it has best range of features for the price range. If your strictly weddings and UE the 5d would probably be great as you wouldn't need the high FPS and AF tracking ability.
I wish that I could afford the 5dmkII and that it shot 5-6 fps with the AF system more like the 1 series or 7D. oh well something to hope for if they make a 5D mark III.

Why couldn't you do weddings with an XT? I did some with a 300D before I got my 20D. Sure some of the features of an XXD or XD camera do help, but if you are competent photographer there is no reason you can't use a rebel series for wedding photography. A 1Ds MK III and a bag full of L glass does not a good wedding photographer make without the skill to back it up.
I haven't yet done a wedding with the 7D (first one next month), so I'm not yet sure what difference it will make other than resolution over the 20D. I think I'll find the user presets very useful (C1-C3), but other cameras have that too. The better viewfinder is really nice, but not a showstopper on other cameras either. The main reason I got the 7D was the improved AF for nature shots.
