Okay, practically everything I've found, and most of what people here are saying, is that the T2i's probably my best bet. As this will be the first DSLR I actually own, however, I know nothing about buying lenses. I don't even know where to start, TBH. Help?

Start with the kit lens, and buy the fixed-focal length 50mm (No zoom, very sharp in low light) or a wide angle lens, maybe.

Gratifyingly specific. Thanks!

Yeah. BUT even a used 5D Mark 1 goes for $500 more than a new T2i.
Let alone the Mark 2 which goes used for $1500 more.

I got mine for $900 off craigslist.

And anyone calling the 5dMkI a dinosaur is a fucking idiot.

....I hate gearheads, I shouldn't be in this thread.

This is a dinosaur.

The upcoming Droid X has an 8MP camera.

My current Nokia N86 has an 8 Megapixel camera (with 28mm Wide Angle Carl Zeiss Lens) - and it's been out for over a year now.

/Doesn't in any way replace my SLR... DOES replace and wipe the floor with my P&S though.

I was speaking more of your average phone. Most i've seen range in 1.3-3.5 mp.

The nokia N86 is badass btw.

The last less than five mega-pixel phone I had was in 2007. UK is quite a bit ahead in phones!

Having said that though, I've had some high mega-pixel phones that were f--ing awful. What's more important is the design of the lens, sensor and overall features of the camera part of the phone.

My 3.5MegaPixel SE 800 took FAR better photographs than its replacement, the Sony C902 5Megapixel. The 800 had a better lens and a larger sensor, coupled with a Xenon flash.

This is also true for Point and Shoot and SLR's too of course; so don't be blinded by a high mega-pixel count alone when making a camera selection.

MPs don't mean Shit... ok ok ok... under four MP is pretty bad...

what about getting one of the .5 mp cameras? pretty rad i'd bet..

really though my earliest memories with a digital camera was like this intel camera with a focus ring (kinda like on a holga), and the picture quality was really... unique looking.. i wish i had one of those to play with today

Megapixel isn't that important, I agree. I'm not using it to determine quality. I'm just using it as a general reference to technological advances.

It's also important to note that I'm poor as fuck and don't refer to the Droid as simply a phone.

That 1.3 megapixel olympus is a badass camera. I think it takes a better photo than the 7.1 megapixel kodak that my mom replaced it with. But it is certainly a dinosaur.

So i think a better rule is if your camera uses one of these it's a dinosaur

This sort of goes here, What camera BAG do you recommend? I'm looking at the Lowepro Fastpack 100:

Fastpack 100

I'm thinking about getting one to replace my UE bag since I try to go with as little gear as possible, have minimal camera equipment, and am not planning on buying more equipment in the foreseeable future. My question is, has anyone used or seen one in person? Is the personal effects compartment big enough to hold some flashlights/headlamps, batteries, gloves, a hat and a respirator?

Fastpack 100 review

I guess there is always the 200:

Looking for a replacement DSLR

I will be moving from the Cincinnati area at the end of July and have to give back the DSLR I have been using for the past year. I can't afford a brand new one but am looking to spend on a used if anyone knows of one or is ready to let one go themselves. I am moving to DC but will pay shipping if necessary. I realize this is a longshot but I thought I'd throw it out there. Thanks all.

Sorry to hear the Queen City is losing a member.

I'd try Craigs List when you get in DC first. Sometimes you find people that don't know what they have and can get a decent deal, plus inspect it before you buy.

Adorama usually has decent factory refurbished models.

How much are you looking to spend? I've got an XSI with the kit 18-55 lens UV filter, polarizing filter, and hood. Has original strap, 3 batteries, original box and manuals. I'd take $625 for everything. For $800 I'd throw in a EFS 55-250mm with UV filter, hood both caps and box.

All this stuff is less than a year old, and in really good shape less than 15K clicks on the shutter.

Also both lenses and body are covered by a 3 yr transferable year warranty which cover damage from falling, water, dirt etc. warranty went into effect last October so it has 2+ years left to go.

I would like to upgrade my fuji p&s to a dslr in a month or so...

Right now i'm leaning towards the canon XS with lens kit (18-55 IS) but i've also been looking into the nikon D3000 but the canon seems to have better compatibility with lenses.

Any thoughts or better cameras out there in the same price range?

Thanks.

AVOID THE D3000. The thing is garbage. If you have to get an entry-level Nikon, go for the D5000.
