He wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. And now it's cost him his life.
A man who fell three storeys into a coal chute at the Hearn Generating Station on Unwin Ave. Sunday has died. The unidentified man was with a friend when the pair snuck into the restricted facility on the weekend, apparently to take what cops are terming "artistic photographs" of the interior of the-soon-to-be demolished building.
The victim ventured out onto one of the catwalks to get a better angle when disaster struck - he lost his balance and took the terrifying tumble.
His friend immediately called for help, but it was no easy rescue.
The man was trapped inside the cavernous hole for three long hours, painfully pinned by a piece of metal that wound up lodged on top of him. "He fell on top of the steel plate and while he was trying to get himself out or move around he ended up sliding underneath and getting pinned," Toronto Fire Dist. Chief Paul Halls reported at the scene.
It took crews a while to reach him and gingerly lift him out, realizing he'd suffered serious internal injuries.
But how serious wasn't clear until doctors treated him in hospital. And despite their best efforts, he succumbed there on Tuesday. His name hasn't been released but his family has been notified.
The Ministry of Labour and Police are both still probing what happened. |
Godspeed to the deceased's family and friends. This is terrible news for anyone to have to read about, let alone have to live through.

He was almost certainly a member here. UER.ca is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, UE site on the internet, and certainly the biggest for Canadians. I am sorry if, in my limited knowledge of the pastime, I overly exaggerated UER.ca's popularity. In the future, I will make sure NEVER to refer to UER.ca in a positive light, as that is evidently offensive.

I was just in an abandoned coal power plant this weekend that had tons of high up catwalks. Part of the catwalks were about three stories above these two huge coal hoppers and it scared the hell out of me to get those pictures. Those catwalks are the worst kind of construction for confidence. I am sure they are strong but the grates all look like small parts put together that could come apart in a chain reaction. Reading this was freaky.

Great, just great. I was in the middle of planning a trip to Hearn. I've never been, and wanted to go before it gets totally messed up.

Yeah, after all, Hearn became easy to explore only very recently *rolls eyes*.
I'm sorry to sound like Micro, but I've taken reporters, laypeople, and huge groups of 20+ people into Hearn before, with no problems. If you live anywhere within 100km of Toronto, you really have no excuse for not going other than your own laziness. Just go already and stop making excuses.

Gee, I'm sorry I work eleven hours a day, and then decide to run errands, clean my apartment, spend time with my fiancee, take my truck for repairs, and try to spend some time with friends I haven't seen in a while, plus family that lives out of town.
I'm sure Hearn is more important than all of that.

It's sad to hear that this explorer, Ryan, died in Hearn. I've spent a lot of time in there (though most of that time it was in better shape) and like to think I know the place pretty well, still I know there's a few rough spots here and there and can't express how horrifying this whole ordeal must have been for him and his friend. It's kind of hard to imagine, even while reading this thread it turned from a search and rescue mission, to a successful extraction and finally into a solemn funeral.
I don't think this is the right place to be complaining about your future trip to Hearn being cancelled due to this accident. Or bickering back and forth about why you haven't explored it yet.............just my two cents.
I made this topic public and merged yet another thread into it. Hopefully the onslaught of duplicate threads will stop (not likely).
