If we are talking about games with nothing but abandoned buildings, I'd go with Fallout 4, The Division 2, or The Last of Us Part 2. As someone mentioned before, The Long Dark is good, but it's about survival game mechanics in the wilderness, not realistic graphics or the convenience of easy gameplay.

I'm on PS4 but I could swear they gave it crossplay. I reached the first "ending" but then sorta stopped after that. I'll pick it up again at some point, because I know there's more content. If you're on PS4, I'm doofmaczemy.

No mention of DayZ in here? For shame.

I'm late to the party but finally gave it a try on PS4. Despite broken game mechanics and dodgy vehicle handling, I'd say it's a real good game! I enjoy the constant threat that other players pose, and even the zombies aren't to be underestimated. It's also an explorer's paradise, with it's 225 square kilometers to explore.

The Last of Us kinda had an Urbex feel to it too, but with zombies...

I'm not a fan of zombie stuff, but The Last of Us was really fun. It really hit home with the abandoned and decayed architecture and feel. The zombie stuff was really well done IMO. Cordyceps fungi are real, but luckily none of them infect humans like they can ants (mind controlling them to climb high and release spores basically).

I've spent way too much time killing all the zombies in an area then just wandering around taking in the sights.

I haven't played TLOU2 yet, but it's on my radar. I'll snag it one day when it goes on sale for cheap!

There’s a dude on Reddit currently building something. It’s not 100% urbex, but there’s definitely some influence.

I think it’s a Dreams thing if you’ve got it on PS4.

I'll throw in Deus Ex. Either the original with the Revision mod (available on steam), Human Revolution, or Mankind divided. I'd say that the original is best for exploring, though.

Probably heard this before, but the STALKER and Fallout games have a lot of abandoned environments to explore and can be pretty interesting. The Metro franchise is also pretty good, and Garry's Mod has plentiful amounts of maps on the workshop to fill that niche. Cry of Fear is great if you want to explore abandoned environments with a horror twist.

To be honest a lot of source engine maps like on Gmod are good for that, I love the liminal space ones the most, spooky and relaxing!

I'm actually working on a gmod map right now that's meant to be a realistic take on exploring. A realistic structure with no gamey aspects, such as electricity/random fires, hallways blocked by debris, etc. Also, it's not just wide open, and you'll have to wander the exterior first probing for ways in.

Check out the STALKER series on PC. There is 3 games and they take place in the chernobyl area.

Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl
Stalker: Clear Sky
Stalker: Call of Pripyat

Also the Metro series is really good, especially the third one Metro Exodus

Check them out!
