Oh yeah, and it was awesome that this abandoned insane asylum was smack-dab in the neighborhood in which I grew up!

I grew up in a place that contained a hamlet called "Mineville", where I live now. Since all those mines were closed in 1973, a great many of the buildings were still left and we nosed around them. Curiosity continued to grow and it turned into a hobby.

Stumbled across Action Squads website many moons ago and was totally obsessed by the idea and the possibility of seeing these places so few get to actually see.

Honestly, breaking into buildings as a kid got me into it. That moment of fear when you're scurrying down the hallway of somewhere you're not supposed to be and you hear that sound...
That feeling is why I pursue urban exploration

Not sure what it's like in Canada, but exploring construction sites in the US cops tend to think your a scrapper or thief.
National rolling mills verses a retirement home under construction?
Sunship verses a casino?
Beth Steel verses a casino?
MAB Paint in Reading verses a lot?
All bad gambles and even worse images.
Sam's right. Being able to explore low to medium risk industrial abandonments from the industrial age kicks ass. What you suggest is watered down soup and left over hot dogs by comparison.

Got into hiking because hiking is fun. Never much cared for trails, all the interesting stuff happened when i went off of them beyond the "please stay on the trails at all times" signs. Had a friend who couldn't get anyone willing to explore with her without complaining and thought my interest in trespassing would carry over to abandoned buildings. Turns out, it did.

Going to college in Athens, Ohio, I passed abandoned buildings all the damn time. Go a few miles out of town and probably a fifth of the houses in Appalachia are empty. That, and having an abandoned Kirkbride on a hill overlooking campus was just too tempting. But I've always been an explorer. I don't explore much now, simply because I have too much to lose as an adult. I tend to stay outside, or visit really easy locations.

I don't really remember exactly, but I do remember finding this site, reading FAQ's, ordering and reading AAA, and then started to meet some people and get together with them. I also remember when I first found a major site on google maps, that was exciting! I'll try to remember what particular thing led me to discover "urban" exploration, but it was a long time ago

An exhaustion with the humdrum activities offered by society. Where is the excitement? Where is the risk? "Don't climb trees" they say. "Don't drive too fast." The most adventurous things offered by normal society are ridiculously safe and heavily commercialized. Skydiving? Hiking? Skiing? The thrill dies so quickly.
I want to go where there are no guard rails. I want people to gawk when I tell them about my weekend. I get a rush when I push into a place that very few would risk going.
In short, I am a junkie for exploration.
I got into urban exploration when I stumbled onto abandoned buildings while hiking, then quickly realized that there was an entire world that I had been ignoring.

For me id say it was the Computer game called Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl, back in '07. There were a few other games in the series as well, and well yes they take place in Chernobyl, Pripyat and the surrounding area. During the development of the game they actually went to the areas and photographed a lot, using real areas/buildings/location for the game, so a lot of stuff in the game is a recreation of the real thing. And I thought that was just so cool, especially from such a haunting area. There are comparison videos and photos out there and they are the same, pretty cool! With this it gave me a huge fascination of the whole area. (yes I understand how serious and bad it actually was and it deeply saddens me what happened, but it does create a unique, intriguing atmosphere.
Years go by, always was interested in abandonments but never ever explored them, mainly because I didn't know where to look and didn't know there was an actual community about it. I cant remember how but about 2 years ago now I came across this site, I was beyond stoked seeing that theres a community and forum behind all this. Once I made an account on this site ive been pretty into exploring! Ive always been pretty cautious so it was hard for me to go out now I have a friend whos as serious into it as I am and we've checked out some pretty cool stuff.
I owe all of this to the stalker video games, and it is a serious life goal of mine to visit pripyat someday.

I'm new to UE. But I've always been into old, abandoned places. One specific is Waverly Hills. My mom had to do a college paper on it years ago that I helped with. I became obsessed with learning everything I could about it. Unfortunately when I learned about this place, I didn't have a vehicle and I wouldn't go alone obviously. By the time I was old enough and had friends interested in the same thing, Waverly was/is being renovated with crazy mad security. They have tours though so one day I plan to do that. The architecture, just the feeling I get when I see pictures. I love taking pictures as well.

A few guys I was friends with brought me to the train tracks in our neighborhood. I went back another day, and decided that I'd wander down the tracks until I found something interesting. Me and my friends stumbled upon an old abandoned train loading station. Ever since then I've been exploring whenever and wherever I could!

I met a few people in the same program as me at my university who were very active explorers, and after tagging along with them a few times I was hooked. I love the challenge of figuring out how to get in, every new site is like a puzzle to solve.

Yeah, all the vacant buildings and storm drains we explored as kids back in the 1960s and 70s wasn't official.
It took the Internet to make it official.
Next; the people on Instagram will claim they invented it.
