Now I know most people frown upon tagging. This just happened in my city and I thought i would share and see what everyone thinks. http://www.fox19.c...8ZnkxAPfk.facebook Now I love both street art and tagging ( I do not do that stuff myself). I understand both in my own way. Hell, Sometimes seeing tags and such through an abandoned building window lets me know there is a way in. Like in nature...everything must die and be replaced. People are angry that these folks tagged over the famous art.I see nothing wrong with it.These things happen all the time and there are no set rules for street art or tagging.Human expression is up to the individual.Just because people think it is ugly does not make it wrong.
Then i see things like this from graffitiactionhero.org :
1. Street Art is constructive, Graffiti Tagging is destructive. 2. Street Art adorns the urban landscape, Graffiti Tagging scars it and accelerates urban decay. 3. Street Art stretches your mind, Graffiti Tagging is a slap in your face. 4. Street Art is about the audience, Graffiti Tagging is about the tagger. 5. Street Art says "Have you thought about this?", Graffiti Tagging says "I tag, therefore I exist". 6. Street Art was done with a smile, Graffiti Tagging was done with a scowl. 7. Street Art takes skill, Graffiti Tagging takes balls. 8. We mourn losing Street Art and celebrate losing Graffiti Tagging.
I guess what i am asking what is your opinion?

I think the assholes that did that are fucking clueless morons. I'm all for street art but roller-tagging over a hand-painted mural is just fucking ignorance created by idiots. No fucking brains. They need a solid Polynesian caning.

I agree it looks like shit and ruined the art...but to each their own.Everything has its time and then it dies.Sooner or later someone will go over the tag with hopefully more art and not just another tag.we shall see.

Art over pointless scribbles and tags, of course. Also, it depends on the location.. Some crap-condition factory? Sure have at it. A pristine asylum? You best not even think about bringing a can of paint inside.

Always an entertaining topic to lurk. Thanks for posting - I just restocked on beer and popcorn. *settles in for the ensuing entertainment*

This isn't about tagging in some historic, abandoned asylum. It's about some dickhole defacing custom-painted artwork commissioned by the city of Cincinnati. It was hand-painted by an award-winning national artist on an active building. They didn't even deface it with artwork of any consequence. It's a shitty-ass roller tag!

I probably should've read the article. Oh well. No fucks given.

The difference between street art and tagging is similar in scope with the difference between ue shots taken with a tripod and taken without. Minly it's a matter of time and safety from being spotted. The same people who do street art also tag. Remember that all graffiti begets more graffiti, so if you see some nice street art soon it will be joined by shittier tags. So many of the assumptions in that list are flawed.

Damn, you get around. I've seen your art in just about every place I've seen except the hospital. Good luck with that one. Absolutely despise taggers. Throwing your shit little name nobody can read up on every surface possible does not equal art. And tagging over some real art, that's just absolute lack of class deserving of a beat down.

Like the others have said.. it's all about context.. But it goes a layer deeper too.. I think that if you don't have permission/approval of the owner of the surface you are painting it IS graffiti.. No matter how much work you put in.. or how good it looks..

First and foremost I do not and will never condone graffiti. However I'll also say it's been done for thousands of years before us and will continue to be done well after we're gone from this earth. As for the mural, whoever defaced it is nothing more than a worthless toy who deserves to have his ass kicked and then some. Any graffiti writer worth his or her salt knows there are some things and/or places you don't mess with. That was one. I personally love graffiti and spend many hours researching, finding and flicking it. Granted there are places that I prefer not to see it such as an old church. What really gets my attention and I really love is the graffiti you see on the freights. There's nothing better than walking the tracks or benching some freights and seeing a wholecar then getting a nice shot of it. I have an entire Flickr page just for freight graffiti and graffiti in general. I love it that much....

Disagree. There are some graffiti artists who might consider some targets off-limits (I'd heard a rule from one tagger friend that you don't tag residential buildings), and might be respectful enough not to cover up other art. They don't speak for everyone, and there are more than enough others who will gladly break their rules. Also, I don't think their ethics are ordered by talent.

In my area, the cities seem to love painting over graffiti with plain grey paint... even at a skate park! I believe that cities should be more open about graffiti. They should even go as far as create space for it. embracing them instead of resisting. Perhaps it would reduce the number of graffiti on unwanted / private proprieties. For example, why have a boring concrete column on a overpass when it could be covered in colorful artwork. And lets be honest about it, some of the guys / girls out there are extremely talented street artists.
I'll take a good graffiti over a plain concrete any day. 1. 2. 3. tagging on the other hand, has no artistic value and no one really want / need to know everywhere you've been.
It doesnt matter how you die. But only how you live. |

Picture 1 is an exception, but 2 and 3 are covered in tags. I don't see how you can separate them.

that is my point, if you remove the tags, your left with great art works. I am pretty sure the guy who painted # 2 did not go around his art work and tagged the whole wall... other guys did before or after. #3, i just love that the guy took a huge boring roof of an abandoned spy station in Berlin then incorporated the big concrete ring and made a giant astronaut teddy bear out of it, love the monkey too. I do not care for whats on the side of the building tho.

There's an old building over there that has a lot of historical relevance. It's been visited by more than a few taggers, and one guy made this giant two-storey piece on the outside. I know who he is and we don't get along. When I visited, I discovered that he'd used the interior of the building to practice his tag (visible here in the lower right), and there were rooms where it was nothing but his tag over and over again.
Same guy did both. Later, one of the members of his group told me they weren't urban explorers so they didn't need to pay attention to any ethics or rules. Shortly after that, they had a party in a storm drain during a rainstorm and were almost washed out into the river.

I don't mind most street art if it looks cool and isn't on anything important. That being said, there are shitty tags all over Richmond and that kinda pisses me off. This is one of my favorite examples of street art in Richmond:
If someone were to tag a mural like this one I would be PISSED
