Makes me feel welcome here (not)

Worry not, fair Zod. I remember my hazing. Once I made month three, I really got to know this band of misfits, and began to fit in a little better than before. I know you'll find your niche. I suggest spending a little time on AvChat to get better acquainted with your cellmates here.

Then thank you for being the first not attempting to school me about urban exploration "ethics", even though I live in New England, am in my late 30's, have been doing this shit for years, and was raised and educated as an artist since I was born. (And no, artistry does not pull in any $$$... quite the opposite, actually)

You know, that is the best way of putting it I have heard so far...

This site is only a playground when you are welcomed to the group. Like it or not, this is a community and if you dont want to be a part of something that is over a decade in the making, then find another resource. The reason that UER has 30K+ active members, 11 years of existence, and has outlived all other sites is because it works.

Nuf said.

EDIT:

Just my 2 cents worth...

I have always found that what I get back from a forum like this is a reflection of what I put into it. Positive energy tends to return positive energy. Negative energy returns negative energy.

I've been a moderator on a number of forums and currently run my own site on a completely separate interest. People often complain about how a forum isn't friendly or that it is cliquish. What they don't care to realize is that often we have known each others for years. We've met in person and spent time together. We've watched each others kids grow up. People who have developed friendships have a very different rapport with each other than do two strangers.

It generally doesn't bode well to come into a forum and start complaining about the members or their attitude. Active members are here because they want to be and the environment is comfortable for them. They aren't going to change to meet someone's expectations. I suggest that you consider why you want to be a member of this forum, then decide to participate in a positive manner or find another forum on the web that better fits your style.

Very true, Abby. I quit a forum because I would sometimes let the jerks get to me. When I was a cool to people there, they we cool to me, but sometimes I couldn't resist being a jerk too and then I would get mad when I was treated poorly. Ha.

Anyway, Zod, just roll with it. I'm old like you, let's hang out and you can teach me about art. I'm not kidding.

From my experience, a pretty big part of UER is just dealing with trolls, and not giving a shit about what you say. If you make a stupid post on here, people are going to give you a ton of shit for it, but you just shrug it off and keep posting without giving a fuck. I myself have made some absolutely horrible posts on here while drunk (see picture), but in the end, I just laugh about it and post pictures from exploring and it's all good.

You just have to learn how to tell boneheads to fuck off in a smartly worded, creative and not-too-insulting manner. It helps to make sure your views on the subject are correct and if you fuck up, don't be afraid to apologize. Intelligently explaining your differing views in a logical format helps greatly. Not stretching out the argument after you've made your point is always a plus and constantly getting the last word can sometimes make you look like a drama queen. The best advice of all is don't take yourself too seriously. It's okay to gently mock those who do but be sure you put a smiley after your insult so you can cop an "I was just joking, look, I put a smiley after it" in case a mod wants to break your balls. Be gracious but don't take any shit and don't badger members with whom you disagree with. Sometimes you'll find the guy you think is the biggest prick in the universe is really awesome if you give him a chance and don't act like a pompous ass. Nobody knows everything and everybody here does things much differently than the next guy. You find a lot of common ground too so learn from others while you build respect here by not being an annoying dick blister.

You listen here Ed, I have had it with your positive, level headed attitude. There is NO place for that shit here on UER. Go take you hippy tree-hugging ass and move to California or a pottery forum!
