Sounds promising, but let's not rush into anything too quickly.
What are the criteria you're using for determining when to send a forum thread off to the archives? Are the criteria the same for all of the forums on the main page? Obviously the Encyclopedia and the Journals are special cases - are there any others?
I ask because I noticed some strange things while browsing the forums trying to get an idea of how much time the posts in each active forum cover.
The second column is the most recent post date (taken from the main page). The dates in the third column are taken from the last post of the last thread (or last few threads) in each of the active forums.

I see now that something special's going on with UE Main and Forum Announcements too, but you can see what I'm getting at, right? There seems to be a glitch preventing the odd thread from sliding off to the archive on schedule. Is there any chance that the same glitch is causing extraneous amounts of outdated read-state data to pile up and slow down the forums as a whole?
