Charcoal burners anyone here shoot'em?

Sold all my muzzleloaders years ago, guess I lost interest. Lately I found I missed the boom crack and cloud of white smelly smoke. And the big whack when a .530 patched round ball hits something solid sp I ordered a couple online (Texas doesnt consider them firearms like NY NJ CA etc) Cant wait to go bust some caps. Now I find out nobody around here sells black powder! Homeland Security has made it next to impossible for dealers and retailers to sell it so they dont even bother.

Now Im pretty sure that you could use Pyrodex or 777 BP substitutes for exactly the same thing the bureaucrats are pretending to prevent. And Pyrodex is readily available almost everywhere. More feel good legislation that only puts sanctions on the honest citizen and does nothing whatsoever to stop crime.

Mail order is restricted to 5 lbs or more. WTF? They dont want you to buy just enough to shoot a .54 rifle they want you to buy 5 friggin pounds, or MORE!

The hazmat shipping fee is a hunerd dollar bill so.

In alot of places, when ordering ammunition or Hazmat type things through the mail, the hazmat fee is for items within a certain weight limit.

Take carbide for example. At Karstsports.com, you can purchase carbide for helmet mounted carbide lamps. But they sell 10lb of it at a time. The carbide is relatively cheap, maybe $20 worth. But the hazmat fee is around $60, for "up to 10lb". So they decide to make it worth your while and send you 10lb for $80, instead of 1 lb for $70. I wouldn't be suprised to find that black powder is the same way.

I have friends who shoot BP. I used to reload for my .45-70 using BP, before I switched to smokeless powder for it. I've got it set shooting 500gr bullets right now.

I have around 22lbs of powder. I think its FF grade. I figured that way if I needed FFFF I could grind and screen it myself. You don't maintain the same grain shape doing it that way, and it can be dangerous, but since I procured it as a bulk supply, I thought FF would be a good way to go. And with BP rifles/pistols it's not as picky as much as shooting cased rounds w/ BP.

Instead of shipping, it'd be best to find a supplier out there who still sells it. You should be able to search online and find a dealer of some kind who stocks it. Your other option is to check around at gunshows.

I could ask some friends out there who do BP shooting and see about finding you a supplier. PM me with a better description of your area.

Ive got a CVA optima i hunt with. Same problems here finding actual black powder, seems all i can get is pyrodex substitute. Works fine and i can get it just about anywhere. Id be interested to see the difference between the substitutes and black powder in it!

ha! surprised CA even lets you have it

Pyrodex shoots about the same just a little harder to ignite about 300F higher

my main complaint was it gunked up my bore quicker left more fouling and I cant prove this but it just doesnt seem to have the same kick, I think its slower burning but their data shows it produces higher velocity volume per volume in a cap lock

the new Triple 7 substitute spose to be good in the in-lines with 209 primers Ive never used it designed to produce less fouling

Indeed! Sweet pistol. Weighs a ton, but man its fun. Italian replica, but its tight and shoots great.
