| | | In alot of places, when ordering ammunition or Hazmat type things through the mail, the hazmat fee is for items within a certain weight limit. Take carbide for example. At Karstsports.com, you can purchase carbide for helmet mounted carbide lamps. But they sell 10lb of it at a time. The carbide is relatively cheap, maybe $20 worth. But the hazmat fee is around $60, for "up to 10lb". So they decide to make it worth your while and send you 10lb for $80, instead of 1 lb for $70. I wouldn't be suprised to find that black powder is the same way. I have friends who shoot BP. I used to reload for my .45-70 using BP, before I switched to smokeless powder for it. I've got it set shooting 500gr bullets right now. I have around 22lbs of powder. I think its FF grade. I figured that way if I needed FFFF I could grind and screen it myself. You don't maintain the same grain shape doing it that way, and it can be dangerous, but since I procured it as a bulk supply, I thought FF would be a good way to go. And with BP rifles/pistols it's not as picky as much as shooting cased rounds w/ BP. Instead of shipping, it'd be best to find a supplier out there who still sells it. You should be able to search online and find a dealer of some kind who stocks it. Your other option is to check around at gunshows. I could ask some friends out there who do BP shooting and see about finding you a supplier. PM me with a better description of your area.
