Cant complain about $5 for a box of 20 rounds that are that high of a caliber.

Surplus ammo is CHEAP but corrosive, so clean your gun when done.


I love mine though, VERY accurate ! I am debating on purchasing the $450 Mosin Nagant Sniper rifle instead of the a Remington 700 .308

They do old rifle competitions out here, any gun used in WWI or WWII is welcome. I need to go to one soon.


I say any gun enthusiast should spend the $100 and own one, as well as a spam can of ammo for about $100....

A lot of local places in my area have dropped back down to 70 bucks for a 91/30 if you have an FFL.
When you can pay $140 and get a WWII era bolt action plus 440 rounds of ammo in a spam can, well, that's hard to say no to.

I have a couple. Both '43 Izzys. One is a Reproduction Sniper with P/U scope and the other is an actual ex-sniper I found at gander mountain hiding with all the regular MN's. They both shoot great.

Posted by big dave Dang man, that is a beautiful rifle. That sucks about it being hard to get them where you are, because every local sporting goods store sells them for $100 here, hehe. I know Big 5 used to sell them for dirt cheap.

I just picked one up from big5 last week. A 43 non-counter bored for $150 including all license and backround checks.

Im the only one i know without a Mosin. I think i need one.

I was in one of the local stores the other day and I was kind of surprised to see that they had 3 old Mosin Nagant rifles sitting on the rack and were asking $129 each for them. I found this pretty tempting, but I ended up trading my cousin my SOCOM II for his extra tricked out Saiga 12... to test the Saiga 12, we ran about 235 rounds through it in 45 minutes the other day. It was awesome.

1938 M91/30 here. It's still all as it was from the factory way back when, but I'm looking at getting one of the rails that drops in where the rear leaf sight is, and can mount a long eye-relief scope. That, and a bipod. I had toyed with the idea of changing the stock, but I think I love the look of the original stock better.

I picked up one of the massive ammo cans (700 rounds, I think) for something like, 90 bucks. On the subject of redone stocks, I really love what this guy has done with his custom stock:



He's also designed a folding bipod that fits directly in the stock (shown in the photo above in the closed position), as well as a patent-pending 10 round magazine.

Yeah, I really wish he would put those things into production. I'd buy at least 2.

I'm looking to add a Mosin to my collection soon. I've been reading all I can find on them at the moment. When I pick one up, I'll be sure to post some photos here.

Here's my 1939 (first year of production) M38 Mosin Nagant. It has an incorrect stock (M44) but other than that all matching numbers and a nice bright bore. This kicks like a mule, much more so than the 91/30, and has a nice steel buttplate to top things off. It has a surprisingly nice trigger pull although a little long. The bolt action compared to a modern weapon is incredibly bad. It cocks upon opening the bolt, not the best design. But for $99 (about 6 years ago) it can't be beat. Especially with the 7.62x54R round being so cheap even still.

Speaking of Mosin Nagants and the corrosive surplus ammo that can be obtained so cheaply. Don't let the corrosive nature of surplus rounds deter you. Militaries from around the world have used corrosive ammo for a long time, you just have to clean after the battle wanes. Hoppes #9 will neutralize the corrosive tendencies of the ammunition. Just don't let your weapon sit for days after shooting to clean it. Sooner the better. Also, if you find yourself out of cleaning solvent such as Hoppes, any window cleaner containing ammonia will neutralize the corrosive properties of the mercuric primers in the surplus ammo. In simple terms spray Windex(or generic) window cleaner that has ammonia as a main ingredient, into the bore and bolt face etc to neutralize the corrosive reaction. If you go this route make sure that after treating the rifle with windex that you clean it all off and apply some gun oil to all surfaces to avoid rusting. Enjoy.

Well I am now the proud owner of two Mosin Nagant rifles. My first was a common 1943 Izhevsk, and my second is this 1930 Tula hex receiver:









Upon closer inspection, it seems to have an East German triangle 1 acceptance stamp on the receiver which I think it pretty cool:
