A beautiful day = some exterior shots

Due to an unseasonably warm weekend, I headed out to get some exterior shots of a nearby abandonment I've been to a few times but never had the chance to shoot.

It was built sometime between 1884-1891 (there are no official records concerning these buildings at all, only a few maps that begin to show these streets and buildings around the time mentioned). The apartment blocks were refurbished in the 1970's, but closed again in the 1990's due to criminal activity in the area.

While shooting these photos, I bumped into a man in his late 20's that was driving through. The characters you'd expect to bump into in this neck of the woods are probably some of the most unsavory, but this guy was the complete opposite. He told me about how he grew up there and that most of the units were families, and the drug dealing and other crimes were mostly due to people from other neighborhoods. We had a nice, surprising chat about the place.

And with such beautiful weather I had to stop by a favorite park of mine:

I'm shooting with a Canon Digital Rebel, and these are still some of my first few shots with a DSLR, so I'm still getting a hang of it.

While driving home on Friday night I think Scott Sloan on 700 WLW had an excellent point about the Brent Spence Bridge (the one cloest in the foreground), "Cincinnati does spend their money fortifying bridges to make sure they don't fall, they know it's getting over used, but they keep using tax payers money to reaffirm this point. In Cincinnati we don't need new bridges, we want new studies."

I really like the use of the bench as a leading line in number 4. 5 seems quite overexposed. Other than that, they are nice, sharp shots. Maybe boost that saturation a little bit? The colors seem a bit dull. This weather has been great, 70 degrees today.........calling for snow on Wednesday...

There are some interiors in the location database here:

http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=25689

I didn't get into any interiors, although there were quite a few possible entrances. I'm kicking myself for not going in now, but It's about 3 minutes away from my home so I'm sure I'll get another chance.

it's kinda rare [i believe] to find abandoned apartment buildings because of the way the housing market it, at least in california, so this is really interesting to me. it makes sense though since it was in a rough neighborhood.

This is rare for Cincinnati too, nothing stays empty for very long here, however the location of this place has allowed it to be almost forgotten. Usually buildings in bad neighborhoods get shut down, condemned, and torn down rather quickly. This is really evident in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood (the most crim ridden in the city), where nearly a quarter of every block is simple empty lots where old buildings like these once stood.

This is one of the places I'm considering doing my thesis research and work on (I'm an architecture student, going for masters soon). If anyone has any suggestions for that I'm always open to them as well.

My favorite feature of that place is in your final shot--the juxtaposition of the "Great Society" benches and concrete structures w/the older-style architecture of the building itself. If Cincinnati could ever get it's act together politically, racially, humanly, it could be so much cooler. Unfortunately, it clings to its small-town, small-minded mentality like a drowning person to flotsam. LOL @ poetry. But really, it's a beautiful city that's just effed beyond repair.

You betcha

I just realized this area looks just like the set from Death Wish 3.

I really dig the second shot, its an interesting contrast to all the green overgrown shots from this location.

I can't wait to hit this place again this summer.
