My first UE : NC Bynum Manufacturing Company

Yes, yes, I'm quite the newbie, but everyone's gotta start somewhere :-p

I recently made way to a pair of Textile Mills in the Piedmont region of NC between Raleigh and Greensboro, my first one being the Bynum Manufacturing Company, which was apparently a huge mill, and given the state of the surrounding town, the lifeblood of hundreds. The surrounding area is very somber, driving in from 15/501, you pass derelict structures all around; trailer homes, houses, and the like. It's a beautiful area, but the air hangs heavy.

While not incredibly large, you can tell the building's footprint was rather impressive. All that is left standing is a few separated buildings, one being fenced off and locked shut, and the hum of electricity is present near the underside of the structure.

I still don't know much about the place, what I do know came from the existing UE page for it.

Without further adieu, the pics!

Some sort of mechanized cart near the river

a little concrete section from an older building. Filled with bricks...

The backside of the locked building. Water leaks down from inside the bottom, there is a large circular device under the water, some sort of turnwheel? The original poster on UE got a better shot underneath, mine didn't turn out well.

Backside of the powered building

looking into the building

An interesting bag near the river next to the mill...

Graffiti on what used to be a basement wall

An old heavy door

Inside the "main" building

Large door that leads to a 2 1/2 story drop

Part of the water sluice and the locked building, as seen from the rear window of the "main" building

Part of a secondary building

SAFE!...all the goodies were gone...

Some sort of fluid-filled contraption on a work table

A large textile machine. A bit rusted but I'm sure it could still work...

Good old Quality Lube.

I took a bunch more, but I dont want to bore!

Hope you like em, I'd love to hear feedback about my first UE!
Thanks!

Pictures look great. This place has little changes every time you go. Last time I went the fence to the back area was broken down, and I'm sure its been repaired again by now.

Thanks! I went about 4 weeks after you posted your photos of the place, little things here and there were different. It's amazing to think that in a place so distraught, many people still seem to pass through there, even though it feels like you're the only one to ever have been there after abandonment.

NC has a whole slew of these, i bet. Its a shame that the southern textile industry has tanked, but we can at least see its past.

Great pictures and content! I'm usually not too big on graffiti pics, but for some reason yours really have some expression to them.

I'll try to let you know. I'm driving around the state almost every day, so a lot of times I stop by places unplanned.
