| | Honeymoon Exploring in Punta Cana < on 11/11/2007 11:51 PM >
| | | Well I haven't been doing to much exploring this year. I have been busy with fixing up a new house and getting married. But "who would've thunk it?" I end up doing some exploring while on Honeymoon in Punta Cana. We went on one of those "ATV 4-wheelin'"tours. It turned out to be a lot fun. I certainly got a big ol' UER hard-on when we hit this place. The Sandy Village Beach Resort opened in 2000 or so. It was one of the first resorts in the Punta Cana area. Unfortunately the beach was lousy. Small and full of sharp coral. Word began to spread about how bad it was. People with reservations started cancelling. People stopped coming altogether. The bank foreclosed on the resort. The owner skipped town. The staff, (unpaid in 2 months, got wind of this. They showed up to work like any other day, but then proceeded to loot the place. They took everything they could. Once people in the 2 nearby villages saw people walking up the streets with toilets, sinks, mattresses etc, you can only imagine what happened next. Every thing was ransacked. What was left, got destroyed by Hurricane Ivan. Now it sits abandoned. It was going to become a paintball spot, but rumor now is that the bank will someday try and reopen it.

| | | Dammit! i was just in Punta Cana, and i said to myself "i bet theres an abandoned resort here somewhere" All i got to see was the sunken ship :/ http://maps.google...3616&t=k&z=18&om=1 i just got back form there this morning. If you are able to, can you find the resort on the map and point out where it is? [Edit:] i would fathom a guess that it is this one? http://maps.google...3616&t=k&z=18&om=1 [last edit 11/12/2007 4:43 PM by SoNaive - edited 1 times]

| | | We went to Grand Bahama and had a similar kind of experience. Didn't find an entire resort, but the hotel we stayed in, Xanadu (I should've known by the name) was located in 1978 and wasn't budging. I had a peak around a couple of the empty rooms and actually got up to the roof. The top floors were trashed. I wanted to explore some more stuff, but my wife wasn't wid it. I LOL because I got in an argument w/a cabbie who, while drive a 1977 Lincoln "cab" said the island wasn't dependent upon tourist dollars and had lots of industry like construction. I asked what was being built; he replied, "hotels." It seems that in 1978 American investors pulled out of Grand Bahama for whatever reason and the island has been stuck there since. There was a nice new place Our Lucaya, but everything else showed its age.
You betcha |
