| | | tunnel rumors < on 2/7/2006 8:17 PM >
| | | since there seems to me some sort of tunnel system in every major city, I've decided to create this thread for people to post rumors and snippets about the tunnels in their cities. for myself, back in idaho, along the snake river in garden city, there was rumored to be a series of tunnels created by chinese miners in the 1930's. in chiang mai thailand (where I am, for the most part, right now), I haven't heard any specific rumors but I have observed a great many larger openings that are accidentally struck by modern tunnels, such as the many drainage tunnels that run alongside every road here. so far, none of the tunnels have had the hallmarks of being anything more than drainage tunnles (no shoring, no garbage, no marks more than a few dozen feet inside the tunnels themselves, where construction workers probably poked around). since thailand is so wet, I'd consider it a 50/50 chance of finding any tunnels here with any more interesting history than "this has been taking water away from x place for y years". anyway, what are the stories you guys have/have heard?

| | | In Salt Lake City there is supposed to be a large network of tunnels as well. I think the most common theory is that they were created by the Mormons as an emergency escape, or for some secret church purpose. I have never actually seen any evidence that they exist, but from time to time I will hear rumors. Once we talked to someone who worked at a bar and she said that you could access the tunnels from the basement, but then the bar closed and we could never get the new owners to talk to us.

But I doubt it's true.

| | | The Atlantic Ave. Tunnel in Brooklyn, N.Y. has a few nice rumors, some spread by the public authorities to keep us out: It's inhabited by giant rats and man-eating Nazi saboteurs. Every speakeasy along the avenue has a secret basement entrance into it. Judge Crater, Al Capone, and Jimmy Hoffa are all buried in it, along with everyone else that Murder, Inc. killed. The engine of last train that was hauling the material to seal the ends ran away, crashed into the already sealed far end, and had to be abandoned there because there wasn't enough time to remove it before everything had to be sealed up. (No explanation of how they had enough time to get the track out.) The carbon monoxide level in the tunnel air is unhealthy, almost half of the level on the avenue above.

| | | There is supposedly a tunnel network underneath or around Austin Peay University, of course I don't think they can afford anything like that. Also, there was ALLEGEDLY tunnels between the US and Mexico but I dont buy that from the liberal media! *crazy wide eyed shifty eyes* DO YOU?! [/sarcasm]

| | | Detroit: Rumor that there's part of an abandoned subway tunnel under downtown. Veracity: Very doubtful though the prospect is exciting. Also, there are salt mines a few thousand feet down that cut under part of the city. I used to think this was just a rumor, but see http://info.detnew...&category=business
San Francisco: Opium-smuggling tunnels under chinatown. Veracity: Once true, but probably nothing left. See discussion at http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=27630

| | | I was told by an old timer of a small tunnel system in Schenectady. From research there was a small tunnel system that would interconnect various business downtown that exsisted at one point used by merchants to share resources, but looks like it went away like the pedestrian bridges and stairways that went to the GE plant.

Actually Jester there is but don't forget about those kids that ran into the c.h.u.d. down there eh. The news man said that the kids were down there looking for their pet and came across this unusual sludge. The next thing they knew they heard creepy sounds and sloshing water behind them. DS

| | | There is supposed to be a series of old smuggling tunnels under Las Cruces New Mexico. They were supposed to be used to move liquor from the Rio Grande river to speakeasies in Old Mesilla, which was the bar district. There are definitely steam tunnels under large parts of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | A few of my friends and I have been discussing checking out the Cincinnati subway tunnels. Rumor had it that they’re now locked up tighter than Fort Knox so I took a walk down there with a friend, who happens to be an ex-marine, to check it out. Sure enough both tunnels are blocked by ¾” steel doors and a hefty Master Locks. The locks are covered by a steel box with a just a couple inches of space underneath to access them so that the only way to get to it is from the bottom. The place is locked down. Unless you’re skilled at picking locks (which I’m not), the only other way in is over the doors where theres enough space (if you’re thin enough) to squeeze through and drop down. My only concern was that if you did get in over the doors there would be nothing on the other side to stand on to get back out. On the walk back we were discussing other ways to get in. My idea was to take a cordless Dremel to the lock. Cut the lock, leave it, go back at a later date. Even that I consider highly sketchy considering the camera we spotted on the way back. His only input, “Dude, you want to get in? I could get us in no problem. That’s what I did in the Marines.” I know he was talking out his ass but the mental picture of the scenario was priceless. It involved shaped charges, police helicopters, homeland security, channel 12 news, two guys with cameras saying “but we were just going to take some pictures” and tazers. Lot's of Cincinnati cops with tazers. [last edit 2/25/2006 7:54 AM by Mr. Crafty - edited 3 times]
