Well, between the worse-than-sewage water everywhere; the bodies; Search and Rescue teams trying to get people OUT (still); and armed gangs - might not be the best idea just yet...

My guess would be too dangerous but it probably depends where you go.

I don't know, I feel like there's a difference between abandonment and devastation. These people's homes are empty because they are either destroyed or unfit to live in. Nevertheless, these are still people's homes and things, and I don't think it's a very considerate idea.

I'd definitely be up for it if I had the money and time to get down there, help out while I was at it. I wouldn't mess with people's homes though. In response to what memory_machine said, I wouldn't go into homes anyway, wouldn't be very interesting. But all those big buildings would be calling my name, man, just waitin to be explored.

[edit: oh, and the dangerous part would just make it that much more fun =)]

You might get mistaken for a looter, there have been a lot of problems with theft and violence. The police have had to move officers from search and rescue to anti-looting teams, so they're not going to be too happy to have to deal with you, even if you're not stealing things.

Personally it seems like a dumb idea to use such a disaster for personal entertainment, even if it seems like a perfect exploring opportunity. You'd be better off volunteering for something related to the cleanup, you might get to see interesting stuff while doing something constructive.

Hadn't thought of the looter, thing, and there's the national guard down there too. Definitely don't want to mess with them. =) I'm with you on the volunteering thing, win-win situation man.

You probably just won't get in New Orleans!
Only journalists are allowed(thats what I heard on the news)
Although it looks great to take some pictures in the flooded streets,I think it would be mentally very hard to see the devastation(or the dead body's floating around)

I dunno.. where as most of the time a cop would catch you and tell you to leave.. I think in this case they'd just arrest you throw you in a bus with whoever else they come across.. I don't think they really care what your intent is anymore.. They are just clearin out.. and I doubt they will listen to any excuses you would have to tell them

You shake my hand, say “pleased to meet you.” Look me in the eye, I don’t believe you. TUI, as long as I’m still alive. I live despite you. Realize I’m not one of your kind, I’m nothing like you.

Nah, they'll be right back rebuilding immediately. Just look at Florida, every year they get their ass kicked two or three times, every year they rebuild their trailers and beachfront matchboxes, and the next year they're all surprised as hell that it happens again.

I guess that right now looking at the state of the water, exploring there is kinda like exploring sanitary sewers (maybe more dangerous since there is no body left to rot in the sewers (at least in north america)) so I'll suggest to just forget about this whole idea.

No exploration when there is heavy contamination.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people would say that this situation is different. The area had a LOT of low income housing, and the city is built below sea level. I bet it will take a LONG time to rebuild, and it probably won't be the same again.

That said, I'd wait awhile until the "officials" deem the area relatively safe and are allowing people back in. There'd probably be quite a few places where the owners will just say, forget it.

Or some home or business owner, nerves stretched to the breaking point is ready to blow your head off!

Owner: What are you doing in my shop?
You: Just exploring.
Owner: Sure that's what the last 50 assholes said while they were looting!
Shotgun (enters conversation): B-O-O-M!

And that's assuming the Owner was in a half decent mood to begin with.

My 2 cents worth: The only reason I would go down there is to help out. Going down there to explore would only add to the misery. Think about it, God forbid, but if your home was broken into (maybe a family member was killed or critically injured by the perpetrator, how would you feel if someone was exploring your home like it was some exhibition?
Personally, I would hate that!

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.
