I think many of you are missing that NO is not the only place there. It is a small part of the destruction and yet it is getting the most media coverage. It is the only place were roving gangs were firing at people.

If I could afford it I would have been down there the day after it happened, to both help and explore.

They're doing that because some of New Orlean's fine and upstanding citizens have taken it upon themselves to snipe and innocent people.

More supporting evidence for my contention that the vast majority of Floridians are morons : P

I see evidence daily of most (not all, I've met some cool ones) Floridians being morons, especially while driving. I'm counting down the days until we move out of here in November. Looking forward to seeing snow again...hurricanes, no thanks.

While the thought has crossed my mind that the area would be very interesting to explore, what I've read about disease outbreaks would keep me out of there for awhile.

Guys and Gals,

Leave the area alone unless you're interested in helping the people resurrect their homes and businesses and rebuild their lives.

NOLA is under something resembling martial law. Much of the city is covered in several feet of raw sewage. Security is being administered by an alphabet soup of state and federal law enforcement agencies, in addition to the national guard, the US Army, the Marines, and an indeterminate number of mercenaries. There are no utilities outside of the CBD. Finally, many of those 'armed gangs' that have been looting, robbing and sniping turned out to be made up of NOLA police officers.

This is not somewhere to visit.

I don't think that anyone would want to. There is toxic mold in every flooded structure; not just ordinary gunk either. Stuff from the petrochemical facilities were in the water, along with many other hazardous chemicals. I wouldn't touch that water with a ten-foot pole.

Every water-ravaged structure will have to be demolished anyways.

Besides the sewage and dead bodies these are still peoples homes. They had to leave. There are still lots of personal possessions inside them. Nothing there is really abandoned. I would say go if you are going to help out but leave this one alone. Not to mention at this point the police might end up shooting looters.

New Orleans isnt exactly abandoned. Otherwise it is just like going to a local store when they are closed and breaking in. Just because the people got kicked out doesnt mean its ready for exploration.

Also as its been said above, all the pollution and evil stew that is flowing around there. Most of the bodies are probably picked up by now. At least the ones that are easy to find. I wouldnt think UE would be a good idea yet there. Once they get up and running again, there will be some cool places to checkout. But wait until the city is humming again. The business' that leave will open up some cool places to check out.

Be patient.

New Orleans isnt abandoned; its filled with militants with weapons, sewage, bodies, rotting houses, floating coffins, and crocodiles.

It isnt right to try to infiltrate a town that needs every person in the city to help clean and rebuild.

I would wait several months before considering going there, because if you arent there to help, you shouldnt be there, and will be turned away. Besides, if you want to see New Orleans as a ghost town, you probably will have to wait a year for much of the filth to be cleaned, for people to get their belongings, and then you may have a right to check out the city then.

I personally would LOVE to see the city right now, but know that even after a year of clean up and rebuilding, there will be PLENTY to see, without wading through refuse and dodging bullets.

I was thinking about that a couple weeks ago. I think it would be amazing to head down there but I dont think I would go into anyones personal homes. Maybe some public buildings, but personally I dont think I would be too stoked if my house was ravaged and people broke into it while I was seeking safety. But I still think it would be a crazy experience just to see everything that happened there.

The National Trust is looking for volunteers for FEMA to evaulate historic structures. So if you have any technical knowlege, it would be a way to get free run of the place I am sure...

We have seen precious little UE from post-Katrina LA.
The photos I have seen, the better known ones anyway are HDR nightmares.

Incredible.

My ethics on New Orleans is simply this. Unless I was a resident of the city prior to Katrina, I would avoid it out of respect for those who lost everything.
The temptation is incredible, since many areas are a barren wasteland of abandonments, where one day everything was normal, and the next day, life changed, and so did the city.

I went in November of 2005. Almost a year ago now, I went with my school to do some work in Mississippi. My pictures are not that great, but if you are interested here they are. http://www.worldis.../266765/index.html
