A Cautionary Tale: Falling into the Gowanus Canal

So on a trip to visit my sister in NYC I decided to check some of the more prolific abandoned spots. Since I'm so new to all of this I've been trying to check out some places that are on their way to being demolished or renovated.

So of course I wanted to check the famed Gowanus Batcave in Brooklyn. I had read about how teenage squatters and crust punks once called it home. Since it has recently been purchased by for $7 mill it has been completely fenced in. It is also right next to the extremely polluted Gowanus Canal, which ironically has a Whole Foods next door (so much for healthy choices).

Well trying to find my way in was a tad bit difficult. They had sheet metal fastened to a chain link fence that was riddled in barbed wire. So I decided to take a walk around the edge of the canal.

Now when I say this place is polluted, I'm saying it's legendary. The whole river reaks of sewage. Its basically all poo water and chemicals. So as I was exploring any side entries into the property I found a loose piece of sheet metal and tore it off. I slid through into the surrounding property successfully.

There was a huge whole dug into the ground, where the canal was starting to pour into the property. So basically the canal now extended closer to the Batcave. As I was trying to make my way into the building, I basically was holding onto the wall with all my grip so as to not slide into the water. Of course that ended horribly. I was sliding down the wall and tried to grab onto a nearby rope. The rope unfortunately not connected to anything. I slid backwards into the water, and was actually entirely submerged in shit. I even swallowed some (gross). So I crawled out gasping for air. This exploration was unsuccessful. My phone was entirely smashed and water logged. I was however able to snap one picture successfully of the outside before calling it quits.

Right now I'm awaiting a Dr.'s appointment just to make sure I didn't catch Hep C or other nasties.

Safety first guys. I still haven't given up. I plan on getting into the building before it is entirely gone.

That's just about the most foul thing I've ever heard. But hey, now you have a great party story.

*shakes head* If your nose didn't warn you, your brain should have.

Hep C isn't an issue, but getting in that shit in your mouth might be.
Time will tell, little a doctor can do that would cause further harm with no symptoms except... Hep A is an issue needing prompt preventive treatment: http://www.cdc.gov...rhtml/mm5641a3.htm

In 1 to 30 days if you have gastrointestinal symptoms 3 consecutive days of taking a -fresh- stool samples (I wuv the irony) to a med lab to check for pathogens and parasites may yield results. Regardless of symptoms you may want to do the stool thing anyway after 5 weeks or so.

Check your whole body for sores or other signs of a skin infection for a week or so. Any open cut or abrasion could go south fast. Treat any skin infection that day; get medical attention.

Chances are nothing will happen. If so all you have to lose is your pride...
oops, too late you already posted the story

It takes a certain number, thousands or tens of thousand to produce an infection and it must come in contact with a mucous membrane. A few would not cause infection.
Some GI parasites such as Giardia it only take -1- ovulum to produce infection.
That is in there, I guarantee.

This is going to be fun.

I've worked with divers that regularly have to go into lift stations when a pump fails and they can't pull it up. Before the Ho, they head to the doctor for a full round of antibiotics. They then suit up head to toe completely covered before diving into the station that full of everybody's shit, piss, bath water etc.

Whenever they get out they spray off and head straight to the hospital for a full week of bed rest and observation. It's a "shitty" job but they get paid about $80,000 a dive.

On the flip side fecal transplantation is actually a cutting edge science that's shown some promise. This may have actually helped you!

Sorry Peptic there's no up side to swallowing a mouthful of shit unless it's been specially selected from a suitable healthy preferably related donor and the feces needs to be encapsulated in a protective capsule to be released after it passes through the stomach. Stomach acid destroys the beneficial bacteria... unfortunately it does no harm to the most virulent pathogens and actually releases parasites from their eggs.

Nice try, but when you get a mouthful of shit, that's all you get if you're lucky.

you might get lucky but you might also get phucucked. It reminds me alot of Hurricane Sandy. In my neighborhood we were flooded with sea water (no big deal) but also $h!t water from the local water treatment plant that shut the flood gates. 6' of sewage water in homes got alot of people sick. I had no choice but to swim through the $h!t (literally) and I got lucky, just a minor upper respiratory infection but more than a few people got seriously ill from it.

And I don't care what they say about the canal & how much clean up they've done, it's still a cesspool & until they get all of the mob's trash out it's going to stay a cesspool

You got it, that is where I climbed down. But hey, I went to the Dr. and everything checked out all right. Might have to do that stool sample test just in case. I will keep all of you posted with pics and a detailed analysis.

I would get the Hep A Immune globulin treatment.
It's no fun ride and it's very contagious orally.
